Research and Teaching Interests

Robert is committed to fostering student success by promoting a strong sense of belonging both in the mathematics classroom and within the broader mathematics community. Robert integrates inclusive teaching with innovative assessment strategies such as standards based grading and specifications grading in courses ranging from introductory statistics to abstract algebra. He co-edited a special issue on implementing mastery grading in the undergraduate mathematics classroom and co-organized multiple sessions on mastery grading at MathFest and the Joint Mathematics Meetings. His research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning—particularly how classroom structures and pedagogies can promote belonging in mathematics—alongside work in coding theory, game theory, and algebraic geometry.
