Benedictine Identity

At Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s, we embrace the Benedictine wisdom tradition – a beautiful expression of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Our communities thrive on the timeless values inspired by Saint Benedict, a sixth-century monk who crafted a rule for communal living rooted in humanity, balance and moderation.

The Benedictine way of life is all about encountering Christ in Scripture, in each person we meet and in the Rule of Benedict as it is lived in our community. This tradition is alive and well here at CSB and SJU, thanks to our dedicated monastic communities. They continuously inspire us with their commitment to values like hospitality, community and stewardship that distinguish Benedictine wisdom. Here we strive to “listen with the ear of the heart” to the needs of each member of our communities, as the Rule directs.

At CSB and SJU, we’re passionate about building a strong sense of community, fostering an awareness of our place in the larger world, and practicing a just and sustainable use of resources. Respect for each individual is at the core of all we do. Living in community teaches us to embrace difference and support one another. A Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s education, shaped by our Benedictine values, sets its sights on the transformation of the mind and heart. It encourages everyone to feel a deep sense of belonging, both on our campuses and in the global community.
