A woman stands smiling in front of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The ancient structure is partially covered in scaffolding. The sky is clear and people are walking around the site.

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

In all honesty, my parents required me to study abroad, and that is why it was in my head. But, I chose Athens because who wouldn’t want to go to the Greek Islands and live out their Mamma Mia dream? The Greece program also had a lot of classes that I needed like art, theology, and social world.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

I have been able to experience how people live on the other side of the world. That is something that many cannot say. Yes, going on vacation is somewhat experiencing another culture, but you are seeing what you want to see. When you live there, you see the good and the bad, and it is truly eye-opening. I am so grateful to be able to teach others about the art, history, sports, and the daily life I have learned from Greece.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

It was truly the best experience of my life. I got to live in a whole new culture and meet new friends from Greece and different schools across the U.S. I was also able to travel and make closer bonds with people from CSB and SJU. I have grown so much, and my perspectives on the world have changed for the better. I feel like I have a better understanding of the world and how other people live. It has made me want to learn and explore the world beyond our small town in Minnesota.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

I know how scary it can seem to leave your friends and family for months but DO IT. I promise you, home will be here when you get back, and you will never have this opportunity again. You have support over there and from here. It will be hard at times, but in the end, a couple hard days is worth the memories you will make and the places that you will see.
