Costs
The total cost of a study abroad program will depend on many factors, including your destination country, the type and length of your program, and what is included in the program cost.
Semester Programs
When participating on a CSB+SJU sponsored program, semester study abroad students will pay the same tuition and fees as on-campus students. In addition, an Education Abroad Program fee is assessed which covers the cost of housing, administration, excursions, on-site transportation and other program activities. Food is included on some programs. See the Financing Your Experience - Semester Brochure and the program pages in the CSBSJU-Global Portal for more information.
It is important to not only consider the cost of tuition, room and board, but also the additional costs of travel, personal spending, sightseeing and souvenirs. International airfare is not included in the charges paid to CSB+SJU on any semester program.
Short Term Programs
Summer & Global Fellowships
The costs for a Summer study abroad program or Global Fellowship vary by program depending on length of program, location, academic credit offered, and what is included in the program. The cost of the program includes the charge for CSB/SJU tuition. The amount assessed for tuition is charged by credit at a reduced rate for summer. A Education Abroad program fee is also assessed that covers housing, administration, excursions, on-site transportation, and other program activities. See the Financing Your Experience - Short-Term brochure and the program pages in the CSBSJU-Global Portal for more information.
In addition to the costs paid to CSB+SJU, students will need to consider additional expenses like food/meals, international airfare, and personal spending for the duration of the program. In some cases international airfare and food are included in the course/program fee.
Embedded Study Abroad programs
Students participating on an embedded course will pay the normal semester cost of attendance at CSB+SJU. There is no additional tuition costs associated with these programs, unless a student needs to pay for an overload over 18 credits in order to participate in the course. A course/program fee is also assessed that covers housing, administration, excursions, on-site transportation, and other program activities. See the Financing Your Experience - Short-Term brochure and the program pages in the CSBSJU-Global Portal for more information. Please note that the cancellation policy for embedded programs is different than the add/drop policy on campus.
In addition to the costs paid to CSB+SJU, students will need to consider additional expenses like food/meals, international airfare, and personal spending for the duration of the program. In some cases international airfare and food are included in the course/program fee.
Other Factors to Consider
- Destination: Talk with student Ambassadors, your Faculty Director or CGE staff about the locations you are considering. On-site costs (food, recreation, etc.) and the upfront costs of getting to that destination (airfare) can vary greatly. For example, airfare to London is less expensive that airfare to China, but overall costs on the China program are considerably less expensive than the London program.
- Exchange rate: Remember that currency exchange rates fluctuate constantly. Visit an online currency converter to stay abreast of the latest rates.
- Program duration/timing: While short-term programs may be less expensive, you may find that there are more resources available to you for semester- or year-long study. Though the sticker price for a semester abroad may be more, the per-day cost can be much less as costs like your plane ticket do not change greatly according to the length of time you are abroad.
- External/Consortium Programs: Charges for study abroad programs not affiliated with CSB+SJU charge will vary. It is up to the student to determine tuition, fees, room and board and other expenses for non-CSB+SJU programs. It is important to know what is included and what is not. Don't just focus on the sticker price. Note that students on external programs will not pay on-campus tuition, room and board.
