The English and Creative Writing Department offers students a concentration in Creative Writing within the English major. Our Concentration in Creative Writing places the practice of creative writing within the study of literature and literary arts, encouraging artistic inquiry through courses in literature, film, theory, and cultural studies.

Students take courses focused on writing Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction, and can study more specialized genres or fields, such as Screenwriting and Playwriting or Medical Humanities through the Clinical Encounters course.

CSB + SJU has a rich creative writing history, from Studio One, one of the longest-running undergraduate-edited literary journals in the nation, to the Literary Arts Institute. The Literary Arts Institute brings award-winning authors to campus for readings, craft talks, class visits, and workshops with students.
