The Coborn family’s connection to the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University has spanned multiple generations and has remained strong even after each family member has graduated.

“The experience and culture at both Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s speaks for itself,” said Emily Coborn Wright ’08, a former cross country and track and field athlete at CSB who is now the senior vice president of retail support services for the family’s grocery chain, which boasts 120-plus retail locations across the Midwest with more on the way.

“And it has kind of called to different members of our family for different reasons, whether for an athletic opportunity, or the academic experience, or the Benedictine values that just seem to kind of permeate the experience.”

The family’s generosity has helped fund numerous projects on both campuses, including the CSB athletic fields and complex located on the east side of College Avenue in Saint Joseph. Coborn Wright is also the President/Director of the Coborn Family Foundation, which has established scholarship funds at both schools.

“Our Coborn Family Foundation, and our family even before the foundation was established, believe so strongly in the power of that educational experience,” she said. “To have Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s in the backyard of the community where our business was founded is so special.”

One of the students who has benefitted from those scholarship funds is Nate Loxtercamp ’24, who last fall became the 13th SJU golfer to earn medalist honors at the MIAC Championships.

“As we all know, college can be pretty expensive nowadays,” said Loxtercamp, who is also a member of the SJU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. “Without the scholarships I’ve received, I probably wouldn’t have been able to come here.”

Loxtercamp said the generosity of CSB and SJU graduates contributes to the community atmosphere that helped draw him to SJU.
