Seven students at the College of Saint Benedict have been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, grants designed to help American undergraduate students with high financial need study or intern abroad.
This spring, the U.S. State Department awarded the scholarships to a total of 3,500 students out of a record-high pool of 17,000 applications. The recipients represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia and have or will use the grants to study abroad in over 170 countries.
At CSB, those destinations include Spain, South Africa, Greece and the nursing department’s community-based nursing program in Costa Rica.
The awards range from $2,000 to $3,000. The number of Gilman Scholars at CSB is up two from a year ago.
“We are so pleased that seven of our College of Saint Benedict students have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship,” said Joy Ruis, director of the Center for Global Education at CSB and SJU. “This remarkable achievement reflects not only their academic excellence and determination, but also our campus-wide commitment to inclusive global learning.
“The Gilman Program enables students of limited financial means to access the transformative experience of studying abroad. These students will utilize the skills they learned abroad to enrich our classrooms, energize our campus dialogue and strengthen the local community through the perspectives they bring home. We are honored to play a role in fostering the globally engaged leaders of tomorrow.”
Established by the U.S. Congress, the Gilman Scholarship is an initiative of the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is aided in its implementation by the Institute of International Education. The next application cycle will be launched in August 2025.
