“A Reading of Celan Up Against Simonides”

Anne Carson was the recipient of a Lannan Literary Award, a Pushcart Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and MacArthur “Genius” Award. Her books include Economy of the Unlost, The Beauty of the Husband, Autobiography of Red, and Eros the Bittersweet. This event was funded by the Lee and Rose Warner Foundation and the Jay Phillips Chair in Jewish Studies of Saint John’s University School of Theology.

Li-Young Lee April 4, 2001

Lee’s poetry fuses memory, family, culture, and history. In simple and powerful language, the poems work individually and as a full sequence mediation on the vulnerability of humanity. On April 4, Lee read from his book, Book of My Nights. This event was made possible by funding from the Teagle Foundation. Lee was in residence at the college April 4-5, 2001.

Jason Shinder April 5, 2001

Author of Among Women, poet Jason Shinder is the founder of the YMCA National Writer’s Voice and the director of Arts and Humanities for the YMCA. Shinder’s first book of poems, Every Room We Ever Slept In, was selected as a Notable Book by the New York Public Library. While in residence, Shinder visited classrooms and met the public. This event was funded by a grant from the Teagle Foundation. Shinder was in residence April 3-6, 2001.

Molly Peacock April 25, 2001

Perhaps best known for her four poetry collections, Molly Peacock has also written a memoir, Paradise, Piece by Piece. She recently compiled and edited Graywolf Forum Four, focusing on privacy in the world of contemporary literature, parts of which were chosen to be read on National Public Radio. This event was made possible by a grant from the Teagle Foundation.

Jessica Treadway March 6, 2001

While in residence, Jessica Treadway visited classrooms, conducted workshops, and met with the public.  She was awarded the John C. Zacharis First Book Award for her short story collection Absent Without Leave and Other Stories and is the recipient of an award from the National Endowment of the Arts.  This event was co-sponsored with Graywolf Press and the Teagle Foundation. Treadway was in residence March 6-10, 2001.

Live @ The Jungle: Voices in Fiction March 26, 2001

Jungle artists read from three Graywolf Press novels: Little by David Treuer, And Give You Peace by Jessica Treadway, and War Memorials by Clint McCown. The audience saw these artists bring to life powerful new voices in fiction. This event was funded by a grant from the Teagle Foundation.

John D’Agata Feb. 22, 2001

John D’Agata has been published in such journals as Utne Reader, Paris Review, Gettysburg Review, Ploughshares, and Creative Nonfiction. He read from his new book, Halls of Fame.  This event was funded by a grant from the Teagle Foundation. D’Agata was in residence February 19-23, 2001.

Natasha Trethewey Nov. 1, 2000

Natasha Trethewey’s collection of poems, Domestic Work, approaches subjects such as identity, race, and work. The collection was selected by Rita Dove for the first Cave Canem poetry prize in 1999 and publication by Graywolf Press in October, 2000.  This event was funded by a grant from the Teagle Foundation. Trethewey was in residence October 31-November 3, 2000.

Carl Phillips Sep. 14, 2000

Carl Phillips is the author of Pastoral published by Graywolf Press, and three previous books of poetry: From the Devotions (also published by Graywolf Press), Cortege and In the Blood, which won the 1992 Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize. He has received prizes and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Library of Congress, and has been a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. This event was made possible by a grant from the Teagle Foundation.
