Tips to Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls

January 7, 2025 • 2 min read

Same level slips, trips and falls are occupational hazards that can be found in almost every type of work setting, leading to an estimated 3.8 million disabling work injuries each year.

Excluding ice and other weather conditions, the most common cause of slips, trips, and falls are:

  • Wet or dry substances on the floor
  • Loose or unsecured rugs or mats
  • Cords or clutter in walkways
  • An obstructed view
  • Taking a short cut instead of a proven path
  • Walking surfaces that do not have the same degree of traction

To ensure a safe work environment, all employees and supervisors are encouraged to do their part to help minimize risks for slips, trips and falls:

  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Stay off freshly mopped floors
  • Keep cords and other clutter out of walkways and stairways
  • Ensure adequate lighting in work areas and hallways
  • Store frequently used items in areas that are easily reachable
  • Do not text while walking
  • Never stand on chair, table, or other surface on wheels
  • Wear shoes with good support and slip-resistant soles appropriate for the job task
  • Inspect work areas monthly to identify hazards that could cause slips, trips, or falls
  • Identify and Report Safety Concerns: We are committed to fostering a safe work environment. If you observe a safety hazard, please don’t hesitate to report it to the Safety Committee at [email protected]

By following these guidelines and reporting any safety concerns, we can work together to create a safe and healthy environment for everyone at CSBSJU and OSB.
