Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I was motivated to study abroad because I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and experience life from the cultural perspective I have been learning about since elementary school. This was an opportunity for me not only to grow academically, but to grow personally to develop independence, adaptability, and communication skills that I could not gain if I stayed at home. I chose the Sevilla study abroad program because of the cultural history throughout the city. This program also aligned the best with my majors and academic plan, making it a great place for me to study abroad.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
One of the most meaningful experiences I had while studying abroad was living with my host mom. She welcomed me into her home and introduced me to her extended family and friends, which made me feel like I was at home. Specifically, I loved every time that we got to eat dinner together. She was an amazing cook and made traditional Andalusian meals almost every night. I loved learning about the cultural significance of the meals and being able to experience the culture in this way.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I believe there are many benefits to studying abroad, but the biggest one to me is being able to fully immerse yourself in a new culture. In Sevilla, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the Spanish language and culture that I would not have gotten on a shorter program. This program helped me grow personally because I gained more independence and adaptability. Academically, this program allowed me to enrich my understanding of the Spanish culture that I would not have gotten in a classroom. Lastly, this program also allowed me to grow professionally because I gained many skills that future employers will look for such as problem solving and communication.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
My advice is to go into the study abroad experience with an open mind and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. There will be challenges every day whether it be speaking, trying new foods, or adjusting to new customs, but these moments are what allow you to grow. Also make sure to take advantage of every opportunity, talk to any locals you can, go as many places as possible (within the city and weekend travel), and be present!
