College of Saint Benedict senior, Ava Brown, knows a thing or two about studying abroad. Having spent time abroad on a short-term program in the United Arab Emirates and on semester programs in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sevilla, Spain, Ava’s résumé is sprinkled with CSB and SJU’s institutional learning goals of engaging globally, embracing difference, and living courageously. We sat down with Ava recently to learn more about her experience in Argentina.

Tell us about a course you took abroad that has helped prepare you for your future career.
I took a Community Based Learning course in Buenos Aires that I found to be interesting for learning more about Argentina’s politics and organizations. It was helpful with learning about how things interact and problems the local population is currently facing. We spent part of the course volunteering at different sites in the city, which was helpful for creating connections and allowing me to understand what age groups I want to work with in the future. Also, to be honest, it was just a fun thing to do that changed up the mundane week of classes. It also greatly helped me improve my Spanish! As well as my language partner!
After spending a semester studying in Buenos Aires, what would you say are the top experiences to have in the city?
- I really enjoyed trying to find the best empanadas. That was my personal fun during my time there.
- I think trying to go to a concert while you are there or a fútbol game is 1000% worth it. I went to the Kendrick Lamar concert and the atmosphere and the people there is something unlike anything else. So many artists love performing in Buenos Aires, so go see why for yourself!
- Visiting La Boca and San Telmo are a must for the ferias on the weekends and for some really good food!
What is your advice for keeping a budget while studying abroad?
The easiest way to do this is understanding what you plan on spending beforehand! Do a little research about the cost of food and bring things that you don’t want to spend money on there (toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc.). In your research, also figure out how much travel you intend to do so that you can work it into your budget. Learning how to say “no” politely also helps! Sometimes friends may want to go out for dinner but maybe you want to eat at home with your host family because it’s free and that’s okay!
