For Liz Hamak ’24, becoming a Bennie felt like a natural choice. With parents who met at CSB+SJU and childhood memories of visiting campus, she experienced the sense of community long before officially enrolling.

“I was always drawn to CSB+SJU because of the strong sense of community. Even as a kid, I could feel it,” Liz reflects. “What stood out most during my time as a student was how relationships were at the center of everything—whether with friends, professors, or through activities. It truly felt like a place where I could grow not just academically, but in community with everyone I was around.”
When she looks back on her years as a Bennie, Liz smiles at the many memories. “Doing the Chapel Walk with friends, singing ‘Piano Man’ after a Saturday night at Sal’s, and senior-year traditions made my four years unforgettable. But really, it was the unusual, unexpected moments with my fellow Bennies and Johnnies that made my experience the best ever.”
After graduation, Liz stayed rooted in central Minnesota. She now works as a volunteer coordinator for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud while also giving her time to the TEC (Together Encountering Christ) retreat program in Little Falls and other community service efforts. She also enjoys coaching volleyball, spending time with loved ones, and finding new ways to contribute to the community that has given her so much.
Her desire to give back to the place that shaped her led her to the Young Alum Committee (YAC). “CSB+SJU made me who I am today, no doubt,” Liz shares. “YAC felt like a meaningful way to stay connected while helping young alums build relationships and continue the amazing community we’ve formed.” For her, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the people. “I especially love meeting alums from different years and hearing about their experiences. It’s a joy to see how YAC keeps our community growing strong beyond campus.”
Liz believes YAC plays a vital role in helping young alums stay connected. “It keeps the spirit of CSB+SJU alive after graduation. Whether through events, mentorship, or networking, YAC creates touchpoints that remind young alums they’re still part of something bigger.” Serving on YAC has enriched her life both personally and professionally, strengthening her leadership and communication skills while also broadening her network.
When asked what she hopes for YAC’s future, Liz is quick to share her vision. “I hope we continue expanding our reach so more young alums know this community exists for and with them. I’d also love to host some fun, new events this year!” She also envisions Bennie/Johnnie connections growing even stronger over the next decade, especially with the help of social media, while staying rooted in authentic, person-to-person relationships—the heart of what makes CSB+SJU so special.
Her encouragement to other young alums considering getting involved is simple: “Just try it! Getting involved doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. Giving back not only strengthens our community but also enriches your own life in ways you might not expect.”
And if you’re looking for her on campus or around St. Joe, chances are you’ll find her with an iced caramel latte in hand—especially if it’s from Local Blend.
