Volunteer Spotlight

Beth Garin Tomlinson ’76

For Beth Garin Tomlinson ’76, volunteering for Saint Ben’s is a natural extension of the values she’s carried with her since graduation nearly 50 years ago. A natural science major during her college days, Beth discovered early on that community, friendship, and hospitality would guide her life long after leaving campus. Today, she continues to embody those values by giving back generously to her alma mater and helping to bring Bennies together across generations.

Beth’s heart for service has been expressed in many ways over the years—whether through the Alumnae Board, reunion activities, or supporting events on campus. But one tradition that has become especially meaningful to her is Bennie Day. For Beth, it’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s an opportunity to celebrate what it means to be a Bennie and to create spaces where alumnae can feel that enduring connection.

Her role as a Bennie Day host began in 2022, when her class was finally able to gather for their 45th reunion, one year delayed by the pandemic. Beth and a few classmates decided to extend the celebration by hosting a small get-together on Bennie Day. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something bigger. The following year, they opened the invitation to Bennies of all classes, and the response was overwhelming. Alumnae from the Class of ’64 through recent graduates came together, sharing stories, laughter, and a deep sense of belonging.

“It was just so fun to see everyone talking and visiting, even when they didn’t know each other,” Beth recalls. “There’s always that instant connection—you just know you share something special.”

Her gatherings have since become a model for how simple, heartfelt hospitality can make Bennie Day truly shine. Beth believes strongly in keeping it straightforward: find a welcoming location, let people sign up, and focus on the joy of being together. “You don’t need anything elaborate,” she says. “It’s really about the conversations, the friendships, and the sense of community.”

Beyond alumnae connections, Beth also loves seeing how Bennie Day reaches current students. One of her favorite memories was helping distribute bucket hats and other Bennie Day swag on campus. Watching students light up as they received their gifts reminded her of the strength of the tradition and how it ties past and present together. “We never had things like that when I was a student,” she laughs, “but to see their excitement—it just makes it so worthwhile.”

Beth’s commitment to Saint Ben’s is rooted in the Benedictine value of hospitality, a gift she says comes naturally to her. She delights in welcoming people into her home, into conversation, and into community. Through her efforts, Bennie Day has become more than a celebration—it’s a bridge between generations, a reminder of shared values, and a spark of joy that continues to strengthen the alumnae network.

“I think when students see alumnae volunteering, it shows them what’s possible—that they, too, can stay engaged and connected long after graduation,” Beth reflects. “It keeps the community strong.”

With her warmth, dedication, and tireless Bennie spirit, Beth Garin Tomlinson ’76 is helping ensure that the Saint Ben’s story continues to be written—one gathering, one smile, and one Bennie Day at a time.
