Career Development Checklist:
- Take your first college history course.
- Check out the History Department website.
- Follow us on social media platforms to stay up to date with department events such as “Enjoy History? Discover Careers!” XPO panel which happens on the first Wednesday in November. If you enrolled in the special section of HIST 142 for majors, you will go with our class.
- Get involved with the History Club.
- Attend the spring advising session in the History Department and meet your new History advisor, assigned during your second semester of your first year. Your advisor will help you choose fall semester courses, make a four-year plan, and answer any other academic questions.
- Attend the year-end History Banquet.
- Take HIST 200: Sophomore Colloquium for majors/minors in fall or spring semester. Topics vary but the colloquium focuses on analyzing primary sources.
- Before each registration period, you will meet with your History advisor to make sure you are on track with requirements for the major and the common curriculum and to plan for study abroad and other opportunities.
- Informational Interviews: In HIST 200, you will work with XPO to begin exploring career interests. To do this, all students conduct informational interviews with our alumnae/alumni whose careers appeal to you. Learn if a particular career is for you, identify opportunities to take advantage of while in college to prepare for a career, and begin to make connections in the field.
- Start to think about internship possibilities, perhaps even for the summer of our sophomore year, by attending the History Internship workshop in early October.
- Attend “Enjoy History? Discover Careers!” XPO panel on the first Wednesday in November. If you are enrolled in HIST 200 in the fall, you will go with your class. Even if attended previously, we invite different alums each year, so you will hear about new careers.
- Make your formal application (Major Acceptance) to the History major.
- Talk to our History advisor about specific study abroad and internship options. For summer internships, know that it doesn’t need to replace paid work. Many internship sites will be flexible about scheduling hours.
- Attend the History “resume” writing workshop to learn how to develop a “resume” for summer internships and study abroad
- Attend the History Department’s "Graduate School" workshop: learn what careers require a graduate degree, and think about what you might need to do now to prepare for graduate school in fields such as law, museum studies, library and information science, public history, and others.
- Take HIST 395: Historiography and Methods in Fall or Spring semester. Topics vary but all will focus reading secondary literature on a focused topic. HIST 395 incorporates a resume writing workshop to update your resume and to learn how to talk about the skills you have developed in your coursework for internships, study abroad, and summer work.
- Before each registration period, you will meet your History advisor to make sure you are on track with requirements for the major and the common curriculum and to plan for study abroad and other opportunities.
- Prepare for a summer internship! Attend the History Department Internship workshop in early October. This workshop focuses on preparing student for DC Summer Internships as well as HMML internships, Jackson and Eichten fellowships, and internships at local organizations in the coming summer. Many of the deadlines for internships and for funding for internships are in the late fall.
- Attend “Enjoy History? Discover Careers” XPO panel on the first Wednesday in November. Even if attended previously, we invite different alums each year, so you will hear about new careers.
- Attend the History Department’s Graduate School workshop during spring semester. If you plan to apply for graduate study in your senior year, now is a good time to start your preparations and learn about degree programs in law, museum studies, library and information science, public history, and others.
- Prepare to take any tests required for graduate school such as LSAT, GRE, and MCAT over the summer between junior and senior year.
- Take HIST 399: Senior Thesis in fall or spring semester. You will write a substantial research paper on a topic of your choice and work one-on-one with a faculty member with expertise in that field.
- Attend “Enjoy History? Discover Careers” XPO panel on the first Wednesday in November. Even if attended previously, we invite different alums each year, so you will hear about new careers.
- Attend a History resume-writing workshop to revise your resume by learning how to explain the skills you developed in our History courses, your study abroad and/or internship experiences for employment.
- If you are thinking about graduate school sometime in the future, attend the History Department’s Graduate School workshop during spring semester to learn about degree programs in law, museum studies, library and information science, public history, and others.
