Alum College: Books by Hand: A History of Handmade Books in 10 Objects - Kathy Parker and Matthew Heintzelman

This session will introduce the history of handmade books, using early examples drawn from the Saint John’s University and HMML Rare Books collection, and recent examples from the Artists’ Books collection of the College of Saint Benedict. Participants will experience the long tradition of handmade books that links early manuscripts to The Saint John’s Bible and contemporary book arts.

Alum College: Think We Are Divided Now? A Look Back at 1968 - Ken Jones

In 1968, a half million American servicemen were fighting a war that was losing public support. An unlikely US Senator from Minnesota (and SJU) challenged the sitting President of his own party, a move that would lead to the President deciding not to run for re-election. Two men who stood for peace and an inclusive society were assassinated. Riots engulfed the nation, and led to violent reprisals. We will talk about all this and more, including efforts of students at CSB/SJU to transform their education. Join us for the discussion as we try to use the past to get some perspective on the present.

Alum College: What Does Russia Want? - Nick Hayes '69, professor of history and University Chair in Critical Thinking

While Washington and its pundits paint Vladimir Putin in dark and threatening colors, Nick Hayes, history professor, University Chair in Critical Thinking at SJU and Russian affairs expert, offers a more nuanced picture. Hayes will describe a leader with limited goals, seeking to give Russia a place at the international negotiating table in the face of Islamic terrorism, the European refugee crisis and civil war and unrest in the Middle East.

Alum Eileen Opatz Berger and her daughter, Joan Berger Bachman have just co-authored a book called If Only You Would Ask. It is a conversational manual, a tool to promote meaningful conversation not only when visiting the elderly, but an enjoyable resource for adult children, personal caregivers, grandchildren, and volunteers who work or visit retirement homes and hospitals.

Alum College: Around the World in 385 Days - Bob Bell '94, CSB/SJU Professor of Account & Finance and Author
1:15-2:00 p.m.
Although Bob suffered an accident in ’89 and became a quadriplegic while in the dorms as a student at Saint John’s, he never stopped fully living his life. From careers as a CPA at a Fortune 500 accounting firm, to an attorney at the SEC in Washington and at law firms on Wall Street, Bob brought a wealth of knowledge back to CSB/SJU in 2010 when he returned to teach. In 2016-17, Bob took a sabbatical and traveled the world for over a year, visiting 20 countries, staying in 21 different Benedictine monasteries in 14 countries, and stopping by many more monasteries along the way. In this session, you will learn where he went, what it taught him, and how you can do it too.

Alum College: Thinking about the Reformation 500 Years Later - Where are we Today? - Shawn and Kristin Colberg

October 31, 2017 marked the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther publishing his Ninety-Five Theses and the beginnings of the Lutheran Reformation. Please join us for a reflection on the significance of Luther's teaching as well as early Catholic Responses to Luther. We will then turn to the contemporary question of Christian unity raised by Vatican Council II and pursued in ecumenical dialogues between Lutherans and Catholics over the last 50 years. Our time will culminate in conversation with alums about their own experiences and hopes for ecumenism.

Alum College: Our Neighbors are Muslim: Where Do I Stand? - Mara Faulkner, OSB '62, professor emerita of English

By helping adult immigrants learn English, S. Mara Faulkner '62 has come to know a number of Muslim women and men, most of them Somali. By leading a workshop called “My Neighbor Is Muslim”, she has gained a basic knowledge of the Islam religion. Her experience and newly acquired knowledge challenge many stereotypes and rumors, leading her to this question: What attitudes and actions does the Gospel call us to as we stand with our Muslim neighbors?

Alum College: Facilities Updates Tour - New and Remade: Monastery Buildings, Main and Nursing Department - Chad Marolf

Through the Illuminating Lives Campaign, the College of Saint Benedict is investing in the construction of new spaces and the renovation of others. On this tour, you will learn how it came to be that the college purchased three historic buildings from the monastery and have transformed them into an admissions welcome center and spaces for other college administrative functions. This step has allowed us to free up space in the Main building, which is currently undergoing renovations to become the academic center of campus. Each floor will be remade to house the departments of Math, Computer Science, Psychology and Economics. By seeing the completed Nursing Department on the 4th floor, you will get a good taste of what is to come in the rest of Main.

Alum College: The Saint John's Bible Gallery Presentation - Fr. Michael Patella

The Saint John’s Bible Gallery, which officially opened on October 6 2017, is a place to acknowledge the work that Donald Jackson and his team spent years creating. Fr. Michael Patella will give a short history on illuminated Bibles and how the Saint John's Bible developed. He will also discuss the influence The Saint John's Bible has today on both biblical interpretation and art. Following the presentation, the Saint John's Bible Gallery will be open if anyone interested in looking around the gallery to witness it firsthand.

A sketch of Grant’s military genius In the Civil War, his grasp of Lincoln’s thinking about reuniting North and South, his election as president in 1868, and two terms in which he labored to reduce the huge wartime national debt, recognize the rights of minorities including Jews, and safeguard black citizens by suppressing the Ku Klux Klan. And also turn Washington D.C. into a city of paved streets and notable architecture. And the author of a best-seller memoir written in his own words and toward the end dictated as he neared death from cancer.

Choristers ages 14-18 are selected from across the country to take part in 9-days of choir camp and concert tours. Alum College: SJU Cemetery Tour - Br. Eric Pohlman

Since 1876 the deceased monks of Saint John’s Abbey and deceased parishioners of the Collegeville parish have found a resting place “high above the Sagatagan” on our cemetery hill, oriented towards the rising sun. A 2007 expansion provides for other Saint John’s alumni and friends who have chosen to await the final coming with them. This tour will highlight the graves of some unique personalities, monastic and lay, whose presence contributed to Saint John’s distinctive “sense of place.”
