Specialized Recycling streams

Some recyclable items do not belong in the standard, single stream (commingled) recycling system we have on campus. We can collect these items separately and get them into their unique specialized recycling stream. These items are collected at CSB and SJU in our campus Swap Shops: SJU - Quad 116 and CSB - Mary Commons 120

Flexible Plastic Film

Flexible plastic film (plastic bags, bubble wrap, air pillows, padded mailers, produce overwrap, stretch wrap) can NOT be included in our standard co-mingled recylcing stream on campus.  However, this stretchy plastic film can be collected separately in its own specialized recycling stream.  The plastic film collected on campus is sent to our local Coborn's store and from there sent to NexTrex who combines the melted polymer with wood fibers from salavaged construction materials to produce durable composite decking and outdoor furniture.

Vist How2Recycle for additional information on recyclable plastic films.

Single-use (and rechargeable) Batteries

Batteries of various chemical makeup and design should never be included in standard, co-mingled recycling streams.  If recycling batteries, please follow precautions of taping or bagging batteries to avoid sparking.  Our collected batteries on campus are either sent to Call2Recyle or the local Batteries Plus store.

Small Electronics

Small electronics that are not working or have become obsolete can be dropped in the appropriate bin in our Swap Shops.  Basically anything that has a battery or a cord that fits in your backpack can be considered a small electronic.  Our electronics are sent to either Albany Recycling or Central Appliance Recycling in St. Cloud for material recycling.

Large institution-owned electronics should be returned to IT Services, please contact them.  Personal-owned large electronics can be collected in our E-waste collections at the end of the spring semester.  Contact Sustainability Office if you need help recycling items prior to spring move-out.
