THE ROAD TO EMMAUS
Would I recognize Jesus if I saw him
while I was walking along?
Two apostles who had followed him
didn't; even as he began his walk along with them.
In their grief following his crucifixion
they forgot that he had promised to return
on the third day.
As I walk the road of life,
I watch people and wonder if one of them is him?
In spite of not seeing him so far,
I see evidence of Christ.
A mother consoling a crying baby somewhere.
A person helping an old lady through a heavy door.
A white man telling a black Muslim how to get
a library card.
A grandfather teaching his grandson to be courteous
to those who are ‘different” at school
and not to be a bully.
Thousands of times I’ve see Christ’s teaching
in action everywhere I’ve been.
Maybe, we’re all walking along the road to Emmaus
and just need to realize that, in a way,
we have seen Jesus, but haven’t
recognized him yet.
