Caitlyn Shipp heard the stories calling from inside her early on. Her academic journey has been a quest for the skills to let them out. She appreciates that “Learning is not about red ink corrections, setting in stone our failures, but inspiring a curiosity that never loses its enthusiasm despite our failures.” So she seeks and embraces those opportunities. Jessica Harkins, associate professor of English, supervised the Independent Learning Project (ILP) Shipp designed. Harkins recalled how “She used close reading, analytics and artistic skills to re-contextualize [Christine de Pizan’s] city in a contemporary setting and set of discourses. Developed more fully, beyond the purview of the ILP, such a project could appear in an exhibit.” Shipp is currently editing the second draft of her first novel. And in five years, she hopes to be published, pursuing her master’s and doctoral degrees in English and theology, and on her way to becoming a professor.
