SJU Bookstore hosts author appearances before home football games

The Saint John’s University Bookstore will have author appearances before six home football games this fall, beginning Sept. 6. All book signings take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the campus bookstore, which is located in Sexton Commons.

Sept. 6: Larry Haeg will be signing copies of his book Saint Benedict’s Rule for Fair Play in Sports. Haeg, SJU ’67, is executive vice president of corporate communications of Wells Fargo & Co., based in San Francisco. He is a member of the College of Saint Benedict Board of Trustees. In his book, Haeg scans St. Benedict’s original Rule and describes how St. Benedict might integrate sports into his philosophy of worship, work and play.

Sept. 13: Marilyn Salzl Brinkman will be signing copies of her book Aprons, Flour Sacks & Other Folk Histories. Her book is a collection of articles written for the St. Cloud Times newspaper over a period of five years. It is a mixture of written history, oral history, personal stories and humor. Brinkman lives in rural St. Joseph, Minn.

Sept. 20: Annette Atkins will be signing copies of her book Creating Minnesota: A History From the Inside Out, which is now available in paperback. Atkins is a renowned historian and professor of history at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. In her book she presents a fresh understanding of how a complex and modern Minnesota came into being and offers a fascinating and unparalleled approach to the history of our state.

Sept.27 (Homecoming): Joseph Bailey, Bill McNamara and William Palmer will be signing copies of their books, and George Maurer will be signing copies of his new CD in the bookstore.

Bailey, SJU ’70, will be signing copies of his books Fearproof Your Life: How to Thrive in a World Addicted to Fear; Slowing Down to the Speed of Life; The Speed Trap: How to Avoid the Frenzy of the Fast Lane; Slowing Down to the Speed of Love and The Serenity Principle: Finding Inner Peace in Recovery. Bailey is a psychologist, consultant and public speaker and lives in St. Paul, Minn.

McNamara, SJU ’73, will be signing copies of the second edition of The Player’s Tale. McNamara’s book is about his memories of attending St. John’s University and playing football for John Gagliardi and the Johnnies.

Palmer, SJU ’80, will be signing copies of his books To the Colors: 2006 and To the Colors: 2007. Palmer is a graduate of the SJU ROTC program and a 20-year Army veteran. His books are anthologies of the service experiences of military veterans from southwest Minnesota.

Maurer, SJU ’88, will be signing copies of his CD single Saint John’s Anthem, which Maurer composed for the SJU Athletic Department. The anthem will be broadcast over the Clemens Stadium sound system before every home football game as the Johnnies take the field. Maurer is currently the music director for the Chanhassen Dinner Theaters’ production of Swing.

Oct.11 (Family Weekend): Bernie Evans will be signing his books Vote Catholic: Beyond the Political Din and Lazarus at the Table: Catholics and Social Justice. Evans is the Virgil Michel Ecumenical Chair in Rural Social Ministries and Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at CSB and SJU. In Vote Catholic, Evans helps readers go to the polls with faith and confidence, with special attention to the Catholic position on life and human dignity.

Nov. 8: the Rev. Jerome Tupa, OSB, will be signing copies of his book Painting the Pilgrimage: From Paris to Compostela. Tupa is Director of Campus Ministry and chaplain for Saint John’s University, as well as artist-in-residence at SJU. Painting the Pilgrimage chronicles his journey along the great Christian pilgrimage route from Paris to Santiago de Compostela, Spain on which he sketched and painted the sacred sites along The Way of Saint James.
