Artist-In-Residence at BAC

Gan Yifei, associate professor of fine arts at Howard Community College in Columbia, Md., was an artist-in-residence at the College of Saint Benedict from Jan. 5-25. He received his MFA at Southwest China Normal University in Beibei, Chongquing, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China where CSB and Saint John's University have an overseas China Study Program. He taught there for six years, including students from CSB/SJU, before he came to the University of Tennessee as a visiting professor where he received his M.S. in education and Ph.D candidacy in media technology and computer art.

Gan has been involved in many exhibitions both in China and the United States and has had work published in Phoenix, Overseas Chinese Journal, and the World Journal.

Gan team-taught the January Term course, "Watercolor and Acrylic Painting" with Baulu Kuan, CSB/SJU professor of art. He demonstrated Chinese painting/calligraphy and oil painting portraits in workshops. He also has a display of his work in the CSB art court.

The January Term class had a final mural project with the themes of "The Year 2000" and "Environmental Issues." The mural will be on exhibit in the student gallery at the Benedicta Art Center and students' work in watercolor and acrylic painting in the art court. The exhibit is open to the public from Jan. 24-Feb. 17, 1997.

The College of Saint Benedict is a Catholic liberal arts college for women. It offers, through its partnership with Saint John's University for men, more than 40 majors and pre-professional programs and opportunities for overseas study programs.
