Virtual Computer Lab

Would you like to access the computer lab software on your personal device from anywhere that you have Internet access? Use the Virtual Computer Lab! The experience will be similar to a physical computer lab, but on your personal computer/device.

WHAT DOES VIRTUAL COMPUTER LAB PROVIDE?
  • Access to CSB/SJU lab resources with any Internet connection from your personally owned device (including Apple/Android devices).
  • Access to most software installed in the computer lab.
  • Access to mapped network drives, including OneDrive.

We have built this virtual lab around the industry leading VMware Horizon software. Check the VMware Available Software list to see what software is currently available to work with Virtual Computer Lab.

GETTING STARTED FROM A CAMPUS-OWNED COMPUTER

Windows

  1. From the  Start  menu, launch  VMware Horizon Client
  2. Double-click  view.csbsju.edu
  3. Double-click  Windows Academic
  4. Log in with your campus username and password.

Macintosh

  1. From the  Launchpad, launch  VMware Horizon Client,  
  2. Double-click view.csbsju.edu
  3. Double-click Windows Academic
  4. Log in with your campus username and password.

GETTING STARTED FROM A PERSONAL COMPUTER

The first time you use Virtual Computer Lab, you will need to download and install it.  Follow the directions below for PC and macOS:

How to Install on a Mac:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to the following location:  https://view.csbsju.edu/portal/.
  2. Click  Install VMware Horizon Client.
  3. Under the Product heading, locate your operating system (e.g. macOS or Windows).
  4. Click  Go to Downloads.  
  5. Click  Download.
  6. Run the  VMware Horizon Client installer that is downloaded, and follow the instructions provided on the screen for installation.
  7. Launch  VMware Horizon Client.
  8. Enter  view.csbsju.edu as the connection server.
  9. Click  Connect.
  10. If prompted, log in with your campus username and password.
  11. Double-click  Windows Academic.

GETTING STARTED ON A MOBILE DEVICE

The first time you use Virtual Computer Lab, you'll need to download and install.  Follow the directions below for Android and iOS devices:

  1. Open  Play Store (Android devices) or  App Store (iOS devices).
  2. Search for  VMware Horizon Client.
  3. Tap  Install. 
  4. Launch the  VMware Horizon Client  application from your device. 
  5. In the Server name field enter the following:   view.csbsju.edu  and select  Connect.
  6. Enter your campus username and password and select  Connect.
  7. Select  Windows Academic.

LOGGING ON

  1. Select VMware Horizon Client from the Start Menu.
  2. Click the view.csbsju.edu server address.
  3. In the text field next to Username, type your network user name.
  4. In the text field next to Password, insert your network password.
  5. Click Login.

LOGGING OFF

  1. When closing applications, be sure to tap the X in the upper right corner.
  2. Once you have closed all applications in the VMware Horizon Client, click on the Start Menu in the lower left corner.
  3. Click the Power Button.
  4. Select Shut Down.

ACCESSING YOUR CSB/SJU WORKSTATION REMOTELY

  1. Log into Virtual Computer Lab.
  2. Search for  Remote Desktop Connection  from the  Start Menu.
  3. At the Remote Desktop Connection prompt, enter the Computer node (clear label on the front of the computer) of your CSB/SJU workstation in the  Computer  dialog box. If you do not know the node name of your computer, please contact the Help Desk at 320.363.2228 or [email protected].
  4. Click  Connect.
  5. When prompted to log in, enter the following:
    • User name: ad\username  where username = your network username.  You must use a backslash.  ad/username will  not work.
    • Password: <<your network password>>
  6. You will be now be connected to your workstation at CSB/SJU.

ACCESSING YOUR HOME DIRECTORY (M: DRIVE) OR DEPARTMENT SHARED DRIVE (O: DRIVE)

  1. Log into  Virtual Computer Lab.
  2. Click the  Windows File Explorer  icon.
  3. When the File Explorer window appears, click  This PC. You will see a list of network drives you have access to.
  4. Click the drive labeled  <<your username>> (M:)  to access your home directory or click the drive labeled  Departmental Shares (O:)  to access your department shared drive.

CONNECTING TO A USB DEVICE

Manually Connect to USB Device:

  1. For a Windows device click Connect USB Device on the Menu Bar. For a Macintosh click the USB Icon on the VMware Menu Bar.
  2. Select the USB device you want to use from the dropdown menu.
  3. USB device will be redirected from local system to the remote desktop.

Automatically Connect to USB Device:

  1. Select VMWare Horizon Client from the Start menu.
  2. Connect to remote desktop.
  3. Click on Connect USB Device
  4. Select Automatically Connect When Inserted.
  5. Plug in the USB device.
  6. USB device will be redirected from local system to the remote desktop.
