Program: South Africa Spring Semester

Major: Exercise and Health Science

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I came to CSB knowing I wanted to study abroad. I considered many different programs before ultimately deciding on South Africa. I chose this program because I knew it would be a unique experience and there's a good chance I will never have the opportunity to travel to Africa again. I also knew that studying abroad would be a great experience for me to grow as a person so I wanted to go to the place that was likely going to be the most outside of my comfort zone to really push myself to try new things and I'm so happy that I did!

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

I was fortunate to spend time working with caregivers at Missionvale Care Centre in a township in South Africa where I would go around the community with the nurses and assist them with care. This experience made a lasting impression on me because I was able to interact with those living in the community. I was welcomed with open arms in every home and was invited into their lives by getting to know all of the patients and their family members.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My study abroad experience was absolutely amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat if I could! I learned so many things about not only South African history and culture but also about myself, and I really grew as an individual.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Studying abroad gave me the push I really needed in my life to start figuring out who I really am and gave me the space and opportunities to expand my independence and take that first step towards really feeling like an adult. I enjoyed all of my classes as they gave me a chance to dive into topics that I had interest in that fall outside of the classes I would normally be taking for my major. I also made some lifelong friends that I am so so thankful for and am blessed to have in my life thanks to studying abroad with them.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Just do it! It's not an easy decision to make and I had a lot of anxiety about the idea of leaving home for so long, but I am so happy that I
ended up doing it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that might not ever come around again. It’s such an amazing experience and will give you memories and help you build skills that will last a lifetime!
