Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I wanted to study abroad to grow my knowledge of art history. I saw the most beautiful pieces of art that I have been wanting to see my entire life. My experience was truly life-changing, and I grew as an artist so much! I also wanted to gain a more cultural/global perspective, which I know will help me be more versatile and equitable in my future classroom. I decided on Rome because of my family heritage. My great-grandpa is from a small village in the Tuscan region, and my parents and I actually went to visit. It was truly life-changing, and I gained a newfound respect and pride for my Italian heritage.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

While in Rome, I would visit a local Mexican restaurant once a week (to take a break from Italian food.) The woman there (Susanna) had been working there for years and was always there to make my burrito. I got to know her pretty well, and soon enough, she knew my order and the exact time I would come in. When I came in for the last time, she was sad, but she gave me free churros and wished me well. She definitely made an impression on me, and that experience made me feel like I truly belonged in my small corner of town.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I absolutely loved my time abroad. It challenged me to think in ways I have never thought before, it pushed me to go out of my comfort zone, and I learned so much. I learned a lot about myself, too. I gained the confidence to start doing things on my own (buying groceries, budgeting, etc), but I also took a trip to Venice all by myself. I am proud of all the experiences I had which made me more independent.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Spending a semester abroad gave me the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the culture, language, and city. The classes I took were amazing, and I got to see every corner of Rome, along with some hidden gems. I learned so much about myself, I stepped out of my comfort zone, and I am so proud of the person I became. I gained so much knowledge of the Italian culture, and I came back to the U.S. with a new view of the world.
