Looking for an in-depth field studies or research opportunity on or off campus? Some programs offer academic credit that can be applied toward the environmental studies major with approval from the ES department chair.

Environmental Studies Summer Research Fellowships

Environmental studies majors have the opportunity to apply for a summer research fellowship position each year. These fellowships offer an opportunity to work alongside faculty in ongoing research projects and gain hands-on research experience. Recent research fellows have assisted Dr. Troy Knight with tree-reing research studying past climate and forest demography on the Colorado Plateau; Dr. Joe Storlien with carbon dynamics in bioenergy cropping systems; Dr. Terence Check with the rhetoric of national security and the environment; and Dr. Jessica O'Reilly with the production of knowledge in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Round River Conservation Studies

A research and education organization offering field-based study abroad programs where students work with local people to study, protect and restore wild places. Students earn credits in conservation biology, natural history, environmental policy and experience the culture of indigenous peoples.

A representative from Round River usually visits CSB/SJU once a semester to provide information to interested students. A popular program among our CSB/SJU environmental studies majors.

Wild Rockies Field Institute

WRFI courses explore the complex cultural, political and natural histories of some of the most interesting and beautiful landscapes in North America. Every WRFI course is set up so participants can earn college credit through the University of Montana in environmental studies, forestry, geography, Native American studies, resource conservation and science.

National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)

A leader in wilderness education, NOLS takes students of all ages on remote wilderness expeditions and teaches them technical outdoor skills, leadership and environmental ethics. Courses range from 10 days to a full academic year.
