How many credits is the minor?

The minor has a 22 credit requirement, and students in multiple majors should find that participating in the minor will easily connect to their current area of interest.

Who can participate in this minor?

Anyone. The faculty who developed this minor are committed to making this opportunity accessible to as many students as possible. Regardless of your major, from Physics to Fine Arts, this minor can complement your current field of studies and may introduce you to methods of analysis or modes of communication that strengthen your ability to participate in your primary major.

Who will benefit from this minor?

Everyone. Data Analytics is valuable whether you go into business after school, work for a non-profit, or pursue graduate studies. As more and more data are generated and provided, everyone in all areas will see its value.

I am not very programming/computer savvy and have a weak mathematics background. Can I complete this minor?

Absolutely! While students will complete introductory courses in Computer programming and Statistics as part of the required coursework for the minor, we expect to have a diverse set of fields represented so that students with different skills can work together to navigate data analysis.  More quantitatively capable students will gain from interacting with students better prepared in written and oral communication, and students who find quantitative work more challenging will have support and peers to help them along the way.

When should I get started on the statistics and computer science requirements?

One key to completing the minor and making the most use of it during your studies would be to complete the required courses early in the careers.  Specifically, we recommend that students complete statistics and CS150 before the start of their junior year.
