August 24: Fall 2020 Return to Campus Update #5 to SJU Students
A message from the SJU Student Senate
I trust that you have been doing well and staying safe throughout the course of the summer. From the entirety of the Saint John’s Senate, we are beyond excited to see you back on campus soon. To the first-year students, welcome to Saint John’s! You definitely made the right choice and you’ll soon discover what makes the Johnnie community so unique.
As a Senate, we have been really busy over the course of the summer. Specifically, we have identified three overarching goals for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year, and we want to share with you what we will be working on!
- Effectively spending the Student Activity Fee.
We are committed to spending the Student Activity Fee in a way that will enhance the student experience and provide exciting opportunities to Clubs and Organizations on our campus. Being that the school year was cut short in 2019-2020, our budget has significantly increased, and thus we are looking for ways to invest in the SJU community. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or requests, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email or social media! If you’d like to get on the agenda for a Senate meeting, please submit a request!
- Safely operating in a COVID-19 world.
The SJU Senate is committed to working with both students and administration to find safe yet exciting ways to organize events and activities in a COVID-19 world. We recognize that a top priority for SJU is to keep students healthy, but at the same time, we recognize the need for community – it’s what makes the Johnnie brotherhood so special. We will be actively involved with bridging these two objectives to guarantee that we REMAIN on campus, but also get the social interactions that Johnnies thrive on.
- Working to ensure that our University strives towards becoming an antiracist, multicultural institution.
The Senate has been working closely with administrators, faculty, and students to ensure that our University is taking the necessary steps to becoming an antiracist, multicultural institution. We recognize that everyone has a part to play in dismantling racism in all forms across our campus, and we are committed to provide funding and resources to do so. The SJU Senate recently released our “Call to Action” addressing these very issues and providing a concrete way for all members in the SJU community to aid in this process. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, we’d encourage you to click on the link above to learn more.
If you want to know more about what we are doing on a daily basis, head over to our Instagram @SJUSenate and our Facebook @ Saint John’s Senate. Also check out the SJU Student Senate webpage or email us at [email protected] for further information on who we are and what we do! Finally, if you want to come visit with us, socially distanced and in-person, the SJU Senate office is located on the main floor of Sexton and our door is always open! We’d love for you to stop by!
Again, we are beyond excited to see you in a few days in Collegeville. Until then, stay healthy and have a great remainder of your summer.
See you soon,
The Saint John’s Senate
