Update from CSB/SJU Fine Arts Programming

Dear friends of the CSB/SJU Fine Arts Series,

We miss you all and we miss experiencing amazing art with you.  The joy, light, color, heartbeat and community spirit of experiencing live performance cannot be denied!

We would ordinarily have just unveiled our truly stunning 20-21 season of performances and gallery exhibits – surprising dance, unforgettable music, insightful theater and vivid art exhibits. Unfortunately, these are not ordinary times.

We are invested in our community and we are committed not only to bring you exceptional art – but also to keep you safe, healthy and better off for the artistic experience. In consultation with campus staff, health guidelines, partners across the county and our artist community – we have made the difficult decision to suspend in-person performances from visiting guest artists in fall 2020. We have considered the health and safety of our artists who must travel across the country to arrive, our backstage crew, our staff and students, and most of all, you, our audiences. We also cannot present performances with socially distant seating and 25% capacity in a financially viable way, though we have considered it from every possible angle.

However, we truly love live performance and gallery artists. We heartily believe it is good for the soul and that it nourishes us in a myriad of ways as individuals and communities. We are planning to create the best artistic experiences we can – true to our communities and our mission, with the resources we have.

Here is what you can look forward to this year:

  • Opportunities for artist workshops virtually this fall on campus, in our community and available to all. We’re planning this right now, and we’ll be sharing more details as soon as we can. We will not have a traditional brochure this year and will be sharing opportunities as they are available.
  • Visual Arts Galleries at CSB and SJU. We will have galleries open at CSB and SJU and have preserved the planned season for you. There will be options to experience the exhibits with public health considerations in place in person and in a virtual format.
  • Possibly, some surprise streaming performances or even an in-person performance outdoors if safety for us, you and artists is possible with public health considerations.
  • A continued commitment to world-class artist experiences, direct connections and a community invested vision in all we do. We remain true to our mission to awaken a spirit of curiosity, ignite dialog and illuminate new understanding through distinctive arts experiences on our stages, in our galleries and in our communities.

Our hope is that later this fall we can be confident of presenting a spring season. If so, we will unveil that with truly undeniable joy! The great news is that we have dates on hold with incredible artists and as soon as we are sure the show will go on – you’ll know all about them too.

We have modified and pivoted multiple times in the last months, and we will continue to do so as we seek to give you the joy of art, artists and the undeniable impact of claiming them in our lives.

We are resilient and we yearn to again be together with the art you expect and love from us! We can’t wait to see you again and, until we do, we hope you’ll continue to champion and support us and the value of excellent community invested art in Central MN.

With hope,
