April 8: Important Chile Fall 2021 Study Abroad Announcement

Dear Chile Study Abroad Students and Parents,

I am writing with an important update about the status of the Chile program.  As you know we were very hopeful for the return of study abroad in Chile this Fall.  Due to very recent border restrictions and new quarantine protocols, we needed to pause and re-evaluate this program.  After very careful consideration and evaluation, the Provost’s office made the difficult decision to cancel the CSB/SJU Fall 2021 Chile program. I know that this is very disappointing news, but this decision was based on the following factors:

  • Border closures: As of April 5th Chile closed its borders to international travelers making it more difficult to predict re-opening timelines and our ability to obtain student visas.
  • Off-site quarantines:  If Chile’s borders re-open, the Chilean government has recently instituted a mandatory government-supervised hotel quarantine located “off-site” of our program in Vina del Mar.  Our CSB/SJU COVID-19 risk mitigation policy is based on our ability to manage entry self-quarantines at our international partner campuses or host families.  CSB/SJU is not able to provide the support and resources to students at off-site (non-partner) quarantine locations that we believe necessary to do all we can to ensure student safety.

We know this is an upsetting update as you were planning to spend the Fall semester in Chile, but we must take these developments seriously to ensure your safety and your ability to make forward academic progress in Fall 2021.

Your CGE Program Manager Nicole Clements will be e-mailing you shortly with details on next steps.  Please know that in all cases, you can receive a full refund of the application fee, or you still have time to move to several Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 study abroad programs.

We know this is not the Fall semester you had envisioned, but please know we are here to discuss the next steps moving forward with you.
