January 28: Important Galway and Salzburg Update
Dear Galway and Salzburg Study Abroad Applicants,
The Center for Global Education (CGE)’s top priority is the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff abroad. We continually monitor the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governmental health ministries to guide our programmatic decisions. CGE continues to update the global travel and health assessment (https://www.csbsju.edu/global/covid) for each study abroad program site. Additionally, we have worked with each of our international site partners to understand the impact of COVID-19 on their communities and their respective COVID-19 plans. While we are hopeful that life will be closer to “normal” in fall 2021, we anticipate that all international program sites will still need to maintain a level of COVID-19 protocols.
After very careful consideration and evaluation, the Provost’s office made the decision to cancel the CSB/SJU fall 2021 Galway and Salzburg programs.
The decision to cancel the Galway and Salzburg programs was based on many factors, that include:
- The ability of the program sites to provide sustained housing/support services in the event of student quarantine and isolation;
- The availability of regular COVID-19 testing services;
- The ability to provide modified, hybrid, or online academics in the event of student quarantine and isolation
We know this is an upsetting update as you are applying to spend the fall semester in Galway or Salzburg, but we must take this health, travel, and academic information seriously to ensure your safety and your ability to make forward academic progress in fall 2021.
A CGE Program Manager will be e-mailing you shortly with details on next steps. Please know that in all cases, you can receive a full refund of the application fee, or you still have time to move your application to another fall 2021 or spring 2022 study abroad program (the application deadline is February 17).
We know this is not the fall semester you had envisioned, but please know we are here to discuss the next steps moving forward with you.
