January 7: COVID-19 Update

Dear CSB/SJU Students, Employees and Parents:

The Pandemic Planning Committee would like to provide a campus operations update in advance of spring semester starting on Jan. 10. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience as we manage through our return to campus.

First, we are already seeing large numbers of positive student test results, so we need individuals to be vigilant by staying home when ill, getting tested, wearing masks indoors and following social distancing practices. We are ready for higher numbers of cases, and you should be ready too.

For the next two weeks:

  • We want to emphasize that we are dedicated to providing an in-person learning experience but will take a flexible approach. For the next two weeks, faculty will be able to adjust their courses to hybrid or remote in accordance with their needs and the needs of their students.
  • We are encouraging a slow start to meetings and events during the first two weeks of the semester. We will be temporarily limiting in-person gatherings and events outside of the classroom. If possible, please move gatherings and events to Zoom or reschedule for later in the semester.

Staff and faculty are encouraged to move any meetings to Zoom but should continue to work on campus per their normal schedule wherever possible.

Today, the student quarantine/isolation time is still 10 days. MDH asked that we maintain that timeframe until they release their new guidance early next week. We will adjust our procedure to match MDH’s guidance when that information is released.

CSB and SJU have limited quarantine and isolation spaces. Here is our plan for those students who need to quarantine and isolate:

  • If directed to quarantine or isolate, students who live within 150 miles from campus will need to do so at home.
  • When campus quarantine/isolation spaces reach capacity, we will have students quarantine/isolate in place.
  • When we move to a quarantine/isolate in place scenario, those that are quarantining and isolating will pick up their meals once per day at a location on each campus. The Student COVID Coordinators will provide additional details on meals.

As a reminder, masks continue to be required in indoor public spaces on campus. The CDC is recommending that surgical or medical masks such as N95, KN95 and KF94 provide much greater protection against the spread of COVID-19 than cloth masks. Masks should fit snugly against your face and always cover the mouth and nose.
