Intern Name: Michael Syverud

Major(s): Political Science & Hispanic Studies

Minor(s): Communication

Name of Organization: SEAM Externship at Minneapolis City Hall

How did you find out about the internship and what was the application process?

I found out about my externship opportunity via an email from Laura Hammond and the XPD.

What were your responsibilities at your internship/fellowship/etc.?

I mostly followed around my shadow/mentor and was able to sit in on meetings and did site visits to see how the city works. I was partially responsible for setting up my experience and being an active listener and participant if possible.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your experience?

I was able to explore the types of careers that are possible with a political science liberals arts degree. I didn't really know what was possible with my degree, so being able to see so many different career opportunities was very helpful.

What was the most surprising thing you experienced or learned during your internship/fellowship/etc.?

I was surprised to see how many Johnnie/Bennie connections exist in the City of Minneapolis. I met at least 3 people who were Johnnies, and heard of many more. The network is very real.

How can you apply what you experienced at your internship/fellowship/etc. in the future?

I'll be able to apply how working in an office is like, along with planning for my future. The externship helped me see how my future could play out, and the experience I had was invaluable.

What advice would you offer to future students interested in this experience?

Come in with an open mind, you never know what you might find out or who you might meet!
