Title/Place of Internship: Social Media Intern at Global Impex
How did you find out about your internship/fellowship/etc.?
I originally had an academic advising meeting with my advisor, Professor Kingshuk Mukherjee. While there, we discussed what I plan on doing after graduation. I mentioned how I plan on moving to Los Angeles to further pursue my social media career as a Youtuber and TikToker. It has become quite a huge thing, and I have high hopes for my future in this area. After mentioning this, Kingshuk asked me if I had an internship lined up for me yet. I replied that I did not. He was interested in my social media experience, and offered me a position as a social media intern for Global Impex. I specifically work in the Guild Apparel Company branch of the business. From there, I had landed an internship, and I couldn't have found a better fit for what applies to my future as a content creator.
What were your responsibilities at your internship/fellowship/etc.?
My responsibilities include the following: managing all social media platforms for Guild Apparel Company, gathering data from followers and competitors, and designing clothes. It is super fun so far. I love how I can tap into my creative assets for this internship.
What was the most beneficial aspect of your experience?
The most beneficial aspect of my experience thus far is learning how to grow a social media account basically from scratch. I was lucky on my own personal accounts to have gained such a large following, but it was all a happy accident. Actually having to work to get followers and traction has been a challenge, but it is extremely beneficial to learn.
What was the most surprising thing you experienced or learned during your internship/fellowship/etc.?
The most surprising thing I learned is how many competitors there are. I had no idea that there were so many Minnesota-based clothing companies. Finding a way to gain a competitive edge has been difficult but exciting.
How can you apply what you experienced at your internship/fellowship/etc. in the future?
I will definitely be able to use what I am learning now in the future. I am going to basically be doing this sort of thing the rest of my life. Growing accounts, getting followers, making a brand - all of it is useful.
What advice would you offer to future students interested in this experience?
I would say that it is super fun, and you should go for it. If you have any interest at all in social media, this is a good fit for you. If you love to have fun, be creative and make a living at the same time, this is it. Everything is based off of social media nowadays, so it is crucial to learn the ropes of it all. Who knows what could happen? The internet is an amazing place, and big things can result from it.
