How did you find out about your internship/fellowship/etc.?

I found out about the Jackson Fellows program at a First-Year student and immediately recognized that it would be a great opportunity to grow and make a positive contribution to the common good.

What were your responsibilities at your internship/fellowship/etc.?

As an intern at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, my responsibilities shifted depending on our most pressing needs at the time. My tasks included translating membership documents from English to Spanish, assisting with daily programming at the Moody County office, and drafting a comprehensive technology policy plan. Additionally, I helped with special fundraising events throughout the summer.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your experience?

The most beneficial aspect of my experience was learning how a thriving nonprofit team works together to delegate responsibilities, communicate effectively, and make decisions with members and boards. Between juggling finances, building maintenance, programming, and many other moving pieces, I learned that working in a nonprofit requires flexibility, diligence, and good communication.

What was the most surprising thing you experienced or learned during your internship/fellowship/etc.?

Overall, I was surprised by the vast number of considerations needed to ensure the success of a nonprofit. Each day, I was impressed by the ability of my co-workers to simultaneously handle multiple tasks while always keeping the mission of the Boys & Girls Club at the forefront.

How can you apply what you experienced at your internship/fellowship/etc. in the future?

I learned various lessons this summer that I will continue to value moving forward. In the future, I will apply the lessons that I've learned about organization, communication, and leadership from the many incredible leaders at the BGC. I will also remember the diligence and determination required to make a positive difference in a community.

What advice would you offer to future students interested in this experience?

If you are considering applying for a Jackson Fellowship, do it. Not only will you receive support as you find a high-quality internship experience, but you will also attend an invaluable training experience with the Summer Leadership Fellows that will help you grow as a leader and expose you to many motivated and passionate individuals on campus. I took away countless personal and professional lessons from this past summer.
