Title: Victim/Witness Program Intern
Place of internship: Anoka County Attorney's Office
How did you find out about the internship and what was the application process like?
I found out about my internship through the help of the ELCE office and the Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy & Civic Engagement at SJU. I got in touch with the Victim/Witness Program Supervisor and scheduled an interview.
What were some of the internship highlights?
Some of the highlights of the internship were: the Field Experience to Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF) Lino Lakes & MCF Shakopee, being able to sit through and watch a first-degree murder trial from jury selection through sentencing, and visiting the Tri-County Regional Forensic Lab in Andover, MN.
What was a typical day like? What were some of your major responsibilities?
I assisted Victim/Witness Specialists on a daily basis with client interviews and witness trial preparation meetings. I also produced various criminal legal documents for victims & witnesses such as Complaint Denied Letters and No-Contact Order Notifications. The internship also included regular collaboration with Assistant County Attorneys to explain court proceedings to victims of crime.
What were some of the challenges of your internship?
One of the most significant challenges was dealing with tough criminal court subject matter day-in and day-out.
What did you learn?
Two major things I learned was how to relate to people of many different cultures, backgrounds and socioeconomic classes. I also gained an extensive familiarity of the Criminal Justice system in order to orient victims/witnesses of crime to the proceedings in court.
What advice would you give other students interested in internships?
