Current Position: I am the Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission for Avila University, a private, Catholic, liberal arts university in Kansas City. I manage a staff of 8, which include both admission representatives and support staff. I work with transfers students from across the country to help them make Avila the next step in their educational journey.  I spend time on the phone with these students, but I get to meet directly with students when they visit campus as well. What path did you follow to arrive at your current job? I decided to move to Kansas City after I graduated and then became interested in working in Admissions because of my student employment jobs my last two years of college (I was a tour guide and telecounselor in the CSB Admission office). The Admission's staff person at CSB that recruited in Kansas City recommended Avila and she emailed a contact she had and I was able to apply for an open representative position shortly after graduating.

I started at Avila as an admission representative recruiting high school seniors. I have since worked my up and now manage those same representatives. I have gained many skills along the way in marketing and technology.

What advice/suggestions would you have for students who might be interested in your career? If you haven't had the opportunity to give tours to prospective students, volunteer to give them for the next event that CSB/SJU holds. It is a great chance to see a snapshot of who you might be working with. Once you start at a company, work hard and you may quickly find yourself moving up the ranks. Always work to learn the necessary skills to take on your boss's job and someday you just may!

What is the most satisfying/rewarding part of your job? Most challenging? Enrolling the new students and helping them move in is the most rewarding. You get to see the students grow up in the whole college search process and see their excitement when they finally decide "school A" is the best choice for them. I get really excited knowing they have no idea how much fun they are about to have.

Managing people is one of the most challenging aspects of the job, because everyone is different and I have to adapt how manage based on the person. I have also had to learn how to communicate with different individuals. I work with vice presidents, faculty, staff, vendors and students. Each person requires a different approach and I find that keeps me on my toes!
