Business & Theology Day 2021

Mary Hirshfeld

What’s the Point of Business?
The Role of Profits in a Humane Economy

How should we think about the pursuit of profits from a Christian perspective? On the one hand, seeking one’s own gain seems to be less than perfectly Christian. On the other hand, the modern economy produces widespread prosperity precisely by coordinating the decisions of gain-seeking individuals and firms. In this talk, I want to think through the role of profits by thinking about how they serve higher ends. The result should allow us to retain insight into the value of market-based economies while also giving us a vocabulary for distinguishing between good and bad business practices.

Mary Hirschfeld is Associate Professor of Economics and Theology at Villanova University, having earned Ph.D.’s in economics (Harvard, 1989) and theology (Notre Dame, 2013). Her work is along the boundary between the two disciplines. Her book, Aquinas and the Market: Toward a Humane Economy (Harvard University Press, 2018) was awarded the Economy and Society International Award by the Fondazione Centesimus Annus pro Pontifice in 2019.
