Theology Day

Exploring the Art and Theology of Icons

In-person Event | Presenter: Jane Kelley Rodeheffer, Ph.D.

The biblical idea of "the image and likeness of God" is fundamental to Christian doctrine, since Christ is the revelation not only of the Word of God, but also of the image of God. This doctrine is beautifully expressed in Icons depicting the mutual geatures of loving kindness between the Mother of God and the Christ Child. In the presence of actual icons, we will explore the ways in which Theology in line and color, in gestures and gazes, invites not only contemplation but participation in God's closeness, vulnerability, and total involvement with us.

Dr. Jane Kelley Rodeheffer is the Jones Chair of Great Books Emerita at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. She holds degrees from Boston College, Harvard , and Vanderbilt Universities. Dr. Rodeheffer is an Oblate of Saint John's Abbey and a former regent of the School of Theology and Seminary.
