POSITION TITLE: Ministerial Resident for Retreats

DEPARTMENT: Saint John’s Campus Ministry

REPORTS TO: Director of Campus Ministry


The Ministerial Resident in Campus Ministry for Retreats is the member of the Campus Ministry team who has primary responsibility for working with the retreat program. This Ministerial Resident works in collaboration with the Director of Campus Ministry in the planning and preparation of retreat experiences for CSB/SJU students with a focus on involving men. The Ministerial Resident develops retreat programming, mentor student leaders, facilitates team meetings and directs weekend retreats. The position helps nurture faith development, create community, and encourage students to live lives guided by Benedictine Values. The position requires cooperation with other ministerial residents and may require coordination and cooperation with the CSB Office of Campus Ministry and the School of Theology and Seminary.


1. Works with the Director and student ministers to plan and implement retreat programs

2. Oversees planning of at least two retreats per semester (one per year for men), in addition to one retreat for retreat leaders

3. Recruits and mentors an effective student retreat leadership team

4. Identifies and coordinates with appropriate retreat facilities and services (food, transportation, etc.)

5. Attends bi-weekly Campus Ministry staff meetings and holds regular office hours

6. Works collaboratively with other Ministerial Residents, student ministers, and staff to promote all Campus Ministry programs and services.

7. Supervises and mentors undergraduate employees assigned to this area.

8. Assist with campus wide Campus Ministry events, Sunday student mass, and major liturgies.

9. Assists as needed in planning and presentation of monthly staff development meetings.

10. Assist in the planning of and attend August and January Campus Ministry all staff retreats.

11. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Ministry

Minimum Qualifications:

This Ministerial Resident position is intended to provide an opportunity for 2+ years of ministry 

immersion for a person who is:

a. a professed member of Saint Benedict’s Monastery or Saint John’s Abbey who has either completed or is pursuing a graduate program of theological/pastoral studies; and/or,

b. a student who is enrolled in the Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary and is making progress toward completion of a program of graduate theological/pastoral studies.

Knowledge, abilities, skills:

* Must be a practicing Roman Catholic with continuing active membership in a parish/faith community

* Effective communication skills (listening, speaking, and writing)

* Computer skills

* Maintains a high level of competence, judgment, and appropriate confidentiality

* Knowledge and appreciation of the Benedictine heritage and character of Saint John’s Abbey and University

* Reliable and dependable

* Able to work collaboratively

* Is creative, motivated, compassionate, reliable and organized

* Has some experience with participating in or leading retreats

* Has some understanding of young adult men and their particular spiritual or developmental needs

* A commitment of 2-3 years of residency, based on his/her particular degree program

As a minister of the Roman Catholic Church, the successful candidate will also maintain a lifestyle that is publicly consistent with Catholic teaching and Benedictine values.

Formation Requirements:

Graduate assistants are required to participate in the SOT formation program, including developing learning goals, theological reflections, and individual and group spiritual companioning. In addition to SOT formation, the Ministerial Resident meets monthly with the director of Campus Ministry as part of ongoing formation and assessment.

Work Schedule

Administrative, 9-month (August 15 - May 15); 20 hours per week
