Theology Day

The Time to Act Has Long Passed, So What Now?: Theology, the Climate Crisis, and, a Call for Action

  In-person Event | Presenter: Kari-Shane Davis Zimmerman, Ph.D.

In 2015, Pope Francis penned Laudato Si’ and urged all people, Christian and non-Christians, to take seriously the rapidly unfolding climate crisis that is upon us. Since that time, many initiatives have been undertaken at the local, national, and global level, yet current news headlines remain grim as to the future of planet Earth. In this workshop, participants will re-examine the urgent call placed by Pope Francis to “care for our common home” and be introduced to realistic examples of inspiring persons and groups taking up this call both close to home and around the globe. More importantly, this presentation will challenge participants to name achievable action steps they can take in their own families, parishes, places of dwelling, etc., as the time to act can no longer be ignored.

Kari-Shane is an Associate Professor of Theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at the College of the Holy Cross, her Masters at Duke University then went on to receive her Ph.D. at Marquette University. Kari-Shane’s area of research and teaching include Catholic Moral Theology and Christian Ethics, Sexual Ethics and Feminist Theology in addition to Catholic Social Teaching.

Theology Day is a chance for people in our communities who are seeking a deeper spiritual life or understanding of their faith and its place in their everyday lives to learn from and interact with the theologians of Saint John's School of Theology and Seminary. It offers a chance for these scholars to gain insights and grow in their faith, as well.
