Internships
Meet some of our Summer Interns
Sinloria Macrae worked at the Legal Rights Center - a non-profit criminal defense law firm.
What types of tasks did you do? This summer I participated in a variety of tasks such as research, writing, and direct client interaction. Some of the most interesting tasks I completed was investigating ongoing cases, drafting a sentencing motion that was used in court, working directly with clients by participating in client intake interviews.
How di...d it relate to your major? As a Sociology major I have learned a lot about crime and deviance. That knowledge prepared me for my internship because it allowed me to have an understanding of the social structures surrounding our clients. I was more focused on what events and/or societal pressures led to these crimes happening rather than whether or not the client was guilty.
How did having an internship clarify your goals for the future? This internship reiterated to me that I want to be a lawyer. Last summer I worked with Southern Minnesota Regional Services which was also a wonderful opportunity. I worked in a different area of the law so this summer's experience was completely new to me.
Sheng Xiong was a AmeriCorps Promise Fellow at Robbinsdale Middle School through the Minnesota Alliance With Youth organization.
What types of tasks did you do? ... Promise Fellows coordinate and deliver in and out of school time academic enrichment activities. I also provide attendance and behavior coaching, mentoring and tutoring, all the while collecting and tracking students’ progress.
How did it relate to your major? Majoring in Sociology, I found that my year of service through AmeriCorps were very much connected. In class, we learned a lot about race, culture, gender, socioeconomic, living in rural, suburban, and urban city. It all helped educate me on how to work well with a variety group of people of different backgrounds. Many of the students that I worked with are from low-income families and the majority of them are African-Americans. I was able to better understand them as individuals from having majored in Sociology.
How did having an internship clarify your goals for the future? I have always loved working with children and young people. Serving as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow, it pushed me further in the direction of working in areas that involve these groups of people. Working with young people, I have learned many things about myself and questioning about the many things I have done and not done at their age. It also amazes me how much they know about their surroundings and how much they want to learn. Every child has their own perspective on life. It is as important for them to listen and learn from you, as it is important to listen and learn from them.
Katelyn Hellermann was a Criminal Justice Intervention Advocate Intern at Anna Marie's Alliance, a safe place for women who are victims of domestic abuse.
What types of tasks did you do? Attended court hearings.... Advocated for women. Followed up with women after court hearings. Tracked criminal cases on MNCIS. Involved in the felony level domestic violence court. Prepared, attended and helped teach safety plan class. Learned how to prepare and write orders for protection and restraining orders. Learned how to do on-scene advocacy. Took crisis calls. Attended law enforcement training. Gained experience working with people with diverse backgrounds. Empowered women to have good options for themselves. Collected accurate data for tracking, grants and program assessment. Learned about the criminal justice process and how it relates to domestic violence.
How did it relate to your major? Anna Marie's was the best of both worlds for me. I was able to gain more knowledge of the criminal justice field and grow in that area. I was also able to see and work in the organization as a whole which helped me gain more knowledge of the sociology field. I was able to work with the women and children from many different races, social classes, and social networks on women’s responses to domestic violence. I was also able to see the challenges of regaining a sense of control and competency and help to provide different services. This internship also made me more confident in myself and what I am suppose to do with my life.
Did having an internship clarify your goals for the future? Absolutely. I now know that the criminal justice path is the one I am suppose to be on. I am more excited than ever to continue this journey and do what I love! I think everyone should participate in an internship!
Gao Moua was an intern for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
What types of tasks are you doing?
- Creating spreadsheets of missing persons/unidentified persons in Minnesota
- Highlighting matching NamUs.gov missing persons/unidentified persons with FBI database.
- Creating bulletins for missing persons/unidentified persons.
Having this internship clarified my goals for the future by narrowing my options in what type of work I want to focus on and which career path within the law enforcement agency I want to take.
These are other internships which have been completed by Sociology students.
