A Walk in Grandpa's Shoes

When Benjamin Carey '13 realized that his grandpa, Richard Carey '52, would not be able to attend commencement, he decided to bring Saint John's to his grandpa. Benjamin collected a series of photos taken when his grandfather was on campus and recreated them, starring himself.
The similarities in the two men's experiences are striking. So many years later, Benjamin sang in the same Men's Chorus and posed by the same dorm.
Richard died on May 2, just over a week before Benjamin's commencement. But not before he had the opportunity to see the photos collected by his grandson.
"He had a chance to see the pictures I posted to Reddit the night before he died and while I wasn't able to be there, I'm told that he was very happy to see them and smiled for the first time in days. I'm proud to be his grandson and to carry on his legacy and memory inasmuch as it is tied to Saint John's next weekend as I graduate," said Benjamin in an article in the Huffington Post.
