Looking ahead to spring & summer: Career Office offers advice for avoiding the potholes of summer jobs

As we experience potholes and a few last snowstorms in Minnesota, many of us are dreaming of summer. For students, summer can be an important time to earn money to help pay for college. But summer can also be an important time to gain career information and experience. It's not too early to encourage your son or daughter to begin planning for the summer. Besides working to earn money, summer activities can help students explore and "test out" various career areas. Visit the Career Web site to learn about some key tips that can help your student.

SJU parents asked to complete online survey

The SJU Parent Committee is asking all parents of first-year students at SJU, and any other SJU parent that is interested, to fill out a short, online survey providing input on their son's college experience. The parent survey is currently available on the SJU Web site and can be completed at any time. Any comments or questions received will be sent directly to the Student Development Office and remain confidential.

Bus driver tests students' trivia knowledge

Question: "If birds don't fly south during the wintertime, what do they do to keep warm?"

That's the type of question that greets CSB and SJU students as they ride The Link between campuses. Bus driver John Doman, a retired non-profit executive, quizzes the students every day with a new trivia question, with the winner receiving a Dum-Dum Pop as the prize. His "Are you ready for the trivia bus" story was published by the St. Cloud Times in January and was picked up by the Associated Press and distributed to numerous other newspapers, including the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press. In addition, the Chronicle of Higher Education ran a "Sucker for Knowledge" story on John on Feb. 13.

Answer: "The birds develop a winter coat of feathers, which fall out just in time to make a nest in the spring."
