11. Oak Regeneration

  • The natural tendency of shade-tolerant species like maples, basswood, and ironwood to easily regenerate in their own shade prevents the optimal habitat conditions necessary for the next generation of oaks, which require extra sunlight.
  • From activities like collecting acorns, to cutting some trees to provide "shelter wood" for new oaks, to safeguarding the trees from a large local deer population, Saint John's Abbey Arboretum works to ensure the survival of the oak.
