Abbey Carver


Abbey Carver is graduating in the spring of 2014. She is a management and nutrition major from Faribault, Minn.

What inspired you to become a nutrition major?
At a young age I became very enthusiastic about food. I used to pretend I was on a cooking show and talk to my audience of cupboards while I prepared a boxed cake mix. Since then, I have developed a genuine interest in growing and preparing food. For this reason, I decided to pursue a degree in Nutrition with a food studies concentration.

What advice do you have for students considering a major in nutrition?
Because I took the food studies route, I can allude to that route and acknowledge it as great way to gain exposure to the areas of business and management. I was also able to study abroad and take classes unrelated to my major. Nutrition provides you with the knowledge to carry with you every day for the rest of your life.

How do you anticipate using your degree after graduation?
I hope to land a job in the food industry in sales, sourcing, or marketing.

What has been the highlight of your time at CSB and SJU?
Saint Ben's has presented me with many valuable opportunities. There is no way to pick one highlight because my whole college career has been a great journey. I have thoroughly enjoyed the travel opportunities I have had. I got to study and travel in Ireland, attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in Washington D.C. and lead a sailing trip to the British Virgin Islands. CSB and SJU has encouraged me to go out, see the world and become culturally aware. I am very thankful that my nutrition major allowed room for these opportunities.

What has been the biggest challenge that you have had to overcome?
As a senior, I have been searching for the right fit for the past few months and it can get to be a challenge after hearing "no" many times. I know my education from Saint Ben's will take me to great places if I stay positive!

Are you involved in any other activities or clubs at CSB and SJU?
Yes, I am the Women's Expeditions coordinator at the Institute for Women's Leadership, Nutrition Club co-president and senior class representative. I also studied abroad in Galway, Ireland.
