Opera Workshop to present 'Hand of Bridge' and 'Trial by Jury'

The College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University Opera Workshop will be presenting two operas at 8 p.m. March 7-8 and 2 p.m. March 9-10 at the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, SJU.

"Hand of Bridge" is a 20th century scene by Samuel Barber with a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti. "Trial by Jury" is a comedic one-act opera in English by Gilbert and Sullivan. The entire performance runs about an hour.

"Hand of Bridge," accompanied by pianist and 2012 SJU graduate William White, features a quartet of singers gathered around a card table playing bridge - each singer is distracted by their personal thoughts and passions.

"Trial by Jury" will feature a 24-member student orchestra under the direction of David Arnott, associate professor of music at CSB and SJU. This work, set in modern times, focusses on a "breach of promise of marriage" lawsuit in Hollywood.

The operas include a cast of 27 CSB and SJU students and one faculty member. Tom Speckhard is a voice instructor and director of the CSB/SJU annual opera production.  

The CSB/SJU Opera Workshop provides an opportunity for students to give in-depth study, practice and presentation of classical and contemporary works of opera and musical theater. The group regularly stages full operas as well as revues and excerpts from a variety of stage works. Participation is by audition only. Enrolled students can receive up to two credits.

Tickets are $6 for general admission and $4 for seniors and students with ID. Admission is free for members of the monastic communities.
