Saint John’s Fire Chief Steve Berhow received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award June 28 at the Saint John's fire station.

Leonard Gerten, a junior theology major from Hastings, Minnesota, and an officer cadet in the Minnesota National Guard, presented the award to Berhow. The award was given in recognition of Berhow’s and Saint John’s strong support of Gerten’s service in the Army National Guard.

Gerten, who is also a fireman on the department, said that Berhow has always created a supportive environment for many soldiers from both the Army National Guard and Army ROTC unit. He also said that Berhow has taken special time to train Guard and Reserve service members on the fire department who missed fire training because of their military commitments.

Also present at the ceremony was Br. John Brudney OSB, Saint John’s assistant fire chief, and Bob Adams, ESGR Ombudsman.

ESGR is an agency of the Department of Defense whose mission is to preserve a harmonious relationship between employers and their guard and reserve military service employees.
