Applied Lessons

Priority for applied lessons will be given to those students who have declared, or are seriously considering a major or minor in music. It is recommended that students receive permission from the instructor prior to registration. If you are unable to obtain applied lessons, please note that we offer other courses which provide opportunities for musical instruction and involvement. These classes include class voice, class guitar, class piano and a variety of ensemble organizations.

Appropriate Course Number:
Your status as a major/minor or non-major will determine the course number for which you register. Non-majors should enroll in Music (MUSC) 113 in the appropriate area of interest (e.g. piano, voice, trumpet, saxophone etc...). Music majors and minors should register for Music 227 lessons for the first four semesters of study. Music majors should register for Music 337 lessons for the remaining four semesters of study. It is recommended that students receive permission from the instructor prior to registration. Music 114 is for music majors who study a secondary instrument. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR DURING THE FIRST WEEK TO SET UP A SPECIFIC LESSON TIME. Lessons are held once per week, or as specified by the instructor.

Studio Classes: Studio classes are held on a regular basis in conjunction with lessons. This is a performance class allowing students to perform for their peers. Studio classes serve as preparation for more advanced performance (e.g. juries, recitals, competitions etc.) and they often provide an opportunity to exchange pedagogical ideas helpful for on-going improvement.
