Pete Johnson serves as director of Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos and applied drumset at CSB/SJU. In addition, he maintains a busy performing schedule around the United States and the world.
Pete has performed and toured with the Grammy-winning Bob Mintzer Big Band, Ambrose Akinmusire, Alan Pasqua, Darek Oles, Carl Saunders, Otmaro Ruiz, Bob Sheppard, Russ Ferrante, Maple & Beech and more. In addition, Pete has worked as a session drummer for Capitol Records and is on over 50 albums of jazz and pop artists. In addition to his time at CSB/SJU, Pete maintains a busy touring schedule with Twin Cities groups and has toured North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Pete received his Masters of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California in 2015 and Bachelor of Arts in Music at Minnesota State University in 2009.
Pete’s primary drumset instructors were Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan), Ndugu Chancler (Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Michael Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Frank Sinatra, The Temptations), Aaron Serfaty (Arturo Sandoval, Sergio Mendes, Jon Anderson, Don Grusin), Bill Platt (principal percussionist with Cincinnati Symphony), and Allen Carter (Nancy Wilson, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles, Melissa Manchester, Harry Connick Jr., Glen Campbell).
