Dr. MLK Jr. Celebration
Monday, January 20
- 4:00pm - 5:30pm:
- Lisa Flores' Professional Development for Faculty: (CSB Gorecki 204C): Let's (NOT) Talk About THAT: The Possibilities and Pitfalls of Teaching Inclusively
- Faculty interested in teaching and talking about race, gender, and sexuality often experience both the excitement and energy of teaching traditional curriculum in ways that surface the politics of diversity as we also struggle with uncertainty about how to do so. In this interactive session, faculty will talk about both the possibilities and the potential pitfalls of inclusivity in the classroom. With attention both to curriculum and to teaching practices, we will explore the ways in which, as educators, we can facilitate social change. Much of the discussion will revolve around actual scenarios that students and faculty have shared from other institutions.
- Participants are asked to bring syllabi they have designed around inclusivity, syllabi they would like to redesign, situations they have experienced, and questions and concerns they have.

- Lisa Flores' Professional Development for Staff: (CSB Gorecki 204C): Is It Chilly in Here? Creating an Inclusive Campus Climate
- In this interactive session, participants will be asked to think about the ways that campus units, organizations, and offices communicate diversity and its value. We will explore practices and the ways they both include and exclude. Participants will be asked to think about both the intentional and unintentional messages around diversity that they themselves engage in, to share the strategies and practices of their offices and units, and to identify specific changes they want to implement.
- Participants are asked to bring or be able to describe items or practices from their office that help to create inclusive atmosphere as well as questions and concerns they have.
