Teresa Abraham

Associate, SMI, Inc.  

Dr. Teresa Abraham connects innovators with the resources they need to advance research and bring ideas to market. She served as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where she worked in the Division of International Health Security at HHS. At HHS, she led several multilateral and bilateral engagements with the G7+Mexico that promoted global health security. In her prior role at Gryphon Scientific, Dr. Abraham was the science communications lead and technical expert for the National Institute of Health's Influenza Research and Surveillance programs. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Biology from the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


Geralyn Barone

City Manager, City of Minnetonka

Geralyn grew up in Glencoe, MN and graduated from the University of MN. She interned in the MN House of Representatives and St. Louis Park’s city manager’s office.
Following grad school, Geralyn worked in an administrative capacity in the Brooklyn Center police department, was promoted to personnel coordinator and then assistant city manager. In 1994, Geralyn was hired as Minnetonka’s assistant city manager/director of administration, with oversight of HR, IT, communications, and city clerk.
In 2012, Geralyn was promoted to Minnetonka’s city manager. She serves on the boards of the MN City/County Managers Association and Municipal Legislative Commission. She’s past president of the assistant managers’ group.
Geralyn and her husband Michael, Minnetrista’s city administrator, have two children, including SJU grad Marcus (2016). They’re Gopher season ticket holders for football and basketball. Geralyn serves as finance council chair of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Minnetonka.


Michael Barone

City Administrator, City of Minnetrista  

I have a non-traditional background for my public sector career. I have a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota and worked 7 years in medical research before going back to school to obtain my MA in Public Administration from Hamline University, and making a career switch. I spent 17 years at the City of Eden Prairie, 10 years in HR and 7 years as the Ass’t to the City Manager before coming to the City of Minnetrista almost 8 years ago, first as Assistant City Administrator, and now the last three years as City Administrator. I look forward to meeting and working with a SJU/CSB student.


Chris Bergstrom

Senior Recruiting Assistant, Securian Financial Group

Chris is a 2009 graduate of St. John’s University with a major in Political Science and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, Chris made his way into the private sector where he spent seven years in the retail industry, managing stores in the field and running a wide variety of departments including Sales, Logistics, Assets Protection, Food Service, Grocery, and Human Resources. Chris now works as a Senior Recruiting Assistant for Securian Financial Group in downtown St. Paul, MN where his focus is mainly in college recruiting. In his time at SJU, Chris was actively involved in Football, Track & Field, and Music.


Ashley Bukowski

Juris Doctorate Candidate, North Dakota School of Law  

Ashley is a 2015 graduate of CSB/SJU. After graduation, Ashley began law school at the University of North Dakota School of Law. At the University of North Dakota School of Law, Ashley became involved in the Student Bar Association leadership board, Moot Court Association as the Director of Internal Competition, and Law Review as an Associate Editor. She represented UND at National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition at West Virginia University College of Law in 2017. Ashley has also previously interned as a city prosecutor, while also working in the areas of family law and civil litigation.


Amy Canfield

Medicaid Program Examiner, White House Executive Office of the President; Office of Managment and Budget

Amy works in the Executive Office of the President, where she serves as a Program Examiner in the Health Division of the Office of Management and Budget. Her primary focus in on budget and policy issues related to the provision of Medicaid.

Prior to working for the White House, Amy spent ten years working in various roles within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Her experience includes developing testimony for Congressional hearings, writing rulemaking packages and legislative proposals, creating procedural guidance based on new legislative directives, and budget preparation and execution.

Amy began her civil service career with the VA Saint Paul Regional Office, where she processed and made decisions on veterans' claims for benefits. She completed her Bachelors of Arts from the College of Saint Benedict in 2007 with a major in Political Science, and her Master of Arts in Public Administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2011.

She married her best friend, Michael Carlson, a Tommy, in 2013. They live in Washington, D.C., with their two children, Maryellen "Ellie" and Theodore "Teddy."


Steven Chavez

Attorney & Council Member, Metropolitan Council

Steve Chavez is a legal executive with a high profile, broad practice serving Fortune 500 and mid cap corporate clients in diverse industries headquartered in the Twin Cities area. Presently, he conducts his multi-national transactional practice from his office in Eagan, which includes ethics, compliance, corporate governance, enterprise risk management, business continuity planning and government relations. In March 2011, Governor Dayton appointed Chavez to the Metropolitan Council where he serves as the chair of the Litigation Review Committee, vice chair of the Management Committee, member of the Audit and Community Development Committees and as the liaison for the Metropolitan Council to the Metropolitan Airports Commission. The Metropolitan Council, with 3700 employees, an annual operating budget of $750,000,000 and an annual capital budget in excess of $500,000,000, is the planning authority for the seven county Minneapolis regions and operates public transit, waste water treatment facilities and recreational open space, serving 2.8 million residents. Chavez earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame Law School and his Bachelor of Arts in Government from Saint John's University.


John Chromy

Retired Vice President, Cooperating Housing Foundation International (CHF)

CHF International is an international development organization founded in 1952 that works in post-conflict, unstable and developing countries. Chromy has been with CHF International since 1996. He initiated programs in India, Kosovo, Palestine, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Serbia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Georgia and Lebanon; he also pioneered CHF's unique "Bottom-up Community Participation and Self-Help Planning" approach to economic development, job creation, community stabilization and infrastructure re-construction. John brings a broad experience in managing programs designed to help low-income people on the community and local government level. During his time at CHF, Chromy managed the foundation's relationship with US Congress and the Department of Defense.


Kevin Clarke

Urban Planner and Designer, Hoisington Koegler Group Inc.

Kevin works as an urban planner and park planner for Hoisington Koegler Group, Inc. based in Minneapolis, MN. After studying economics and political science at St. John's University, Kevin went on to graduate school at the Hubert H. Humphrey School for Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota College of Design to pursue urban planning and landscape architecture. With Hoisington Koegler Group, Inc., Kevin develops comprehensive plans for cities throughout the state and region. These policy documents inform the decisions that cities make regarding land use and the environment, as well as investments in infrastructure, parks, and economic development. His work includes urban design, small area & downtown plans, park plans, public engagement, and redevelopment projects for public and private clients.


Anna Cron

Peace Corps Volunteer, Peace Corps  

Anna Cron is a Spanish Literacy Volunteer serving with the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic since March 2017. Anna is from Eden Prairie, MN and graduated from CSB in 2016. After graduation, she worked as a YCorps fellow at Youth Frontiers, a Spanish Instructor for Futura Language Professionals, and did miscellaneous jobs in addition to pouring beer for Wayzata Brew Works and Excelsior Brewery.  While at CSB, she was Co-Director of Extending the Link, a student coordinator for the Eugene J. McCarthy Center, served as a delegate at the UNFCCC in Paris, studied abroad in Guatemala, participated in the Washington D.C. Summer Study Program as an intern for the Organization of American States, interned at CCI in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a summer, and skated for the CSB Figure Skating team. Cron firmly believes that the guidance she received from the McCarthy Center and political science department at CSB/SJU were and continue to be vital resources in helping her pursue her dreams. 


Bridget Cummings

Operations Analyst, Obama Foundation 

Bridget has worked at the Obama Foundation on the Operations team since January 2017. Prior to this, she served as a Policy Advisor at the Obama White House in the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. Bridget studied Political Science and Economics at the College of St. Benedict and enjoyed participating in the College Democrats Club, Varsity Golf, Student Senate, and McCarthy Center events. 


Melissa DeOrio

Research Associate, Exiger Diligence

Melissa DeOrio works as the Turkey-case manager at Exiger Diligence, in Washington, D.C. She conducts due diligence investigations on companies and individuals in Turkish and English in order to identify political, financial, legal and repetitional risks for clients. Diligence investigations seek to prevent financial crime and corrupt business practices by helping corporations comply with the law across multiple jurisdictions.

Melissa studied Political Science at CSB/SJU and has an MSc from University College London in Security Studies. Prior to working at Exiger, Melissa provided research support for international think tanks, completed a Fulbright grant to Turkey, and interned in Bosnia-Herzegovina as a part of CSB/SJU’s Center for Global Education. Some of her favorite memories from her time at CSB/SJU include working with the McCarthy Center and going to West Point to attend the SCUSA conference.


John Dube

Research Assistant, Mayo Clinic

John is a graduate of St. John's University with a double major in Biology and Political Science. John was highly active in extracurricular activities including four years of football, three years of lacrosse, two years of model United Nations, two years of teaching assistant experience in introduction into biology and genetics, and two years of volunteering with the St. John's ROTC battalion. Research experience included work in the cardiovascular disease lab during high school and neural engineering while in college. Neural engineering experience culminated in an honors thesis which resulted in a Biology degree with distinction. Post- graduation, volunteered with the St. John's Benedictine Volunteer Corps (BVC) Program in Sant Anselmo Rome Italy for 11 months. John is currently working as a research assistant in a pancreatic cancer research lab at Mayo Clinic, helping to identify biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms in the attempt to better understand the disease and provide improved patient outcomes.


Gary Eichten

News Editor-at-Large, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR)

Gary Eichten wore many hats during his 40-plus-year career at Minnesota Public Radio, including news director, special events producer and station manager. He served as host for Minnesota Public Radio's live, special events news coverage, and hosted all of the major news programs on Minnesota Public Radio, including Midday, which he hosted for more than 20 years. Among the honors Eichten has received during his career is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting award for best local news program. In 2007, he was inducted into the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting's Hall of Fame. Eichten was also awarded the prestigious 2011 Graven Award by the Premack Public Affairs Journalism Awards Board for his contribution to excellence in the journalism profession. He currently serves on the Westminister Town Hall Forum advisory board.


Diana Elhard

Field Organizer, Lisa Bender for Ward 10, Minneapolis City Council

Diana Elhard graduated from College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in 2016. She studied political science and peace studies. The year after graduation, Diana worked as a refugee resettlement case manager with Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Recently, Diana made the switch out of working with refugees and into the political campaigning. Currently she lives in Minneapolis and works for Council Member Lisa Bender’s re-election campaign. Diana is also volunteering on two 2018 campaigns including 61A State Representative Hornstein and Erin Murphy’s campaign for Governor. On campus she was in Extending the Link for two years, studied abroad in India, and attended COP21 and COP22 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).


Timothy Enright

Political Military Officer, U.S. Embassy Abuja, U.S. Department of State

Since graduating from St. John's in 1999, Timothy Enright has worked extensively in the foreign affairs field. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kazakhstan and since joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer in 2005 has served in Iraq, Russia, Washington D.C., Dubai and Afghanistan. Tim is now serving as the Political-Military Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, where he is responsible for coordinating U.S. security cooperation and assistance to the Nigerian armed forces in their effort to combat Boko Haram. He previously worked on European and NATO policy at the Pentagon and for the consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton.


Mike Erlandson

Principal, Aurora Strategic Advisors

Aurora is a big picture public affairs, government relations and communications firm.  Positions prior to joining Aurora include: Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs and Vice President of Government Affairs at SUPERVALU (2007-2013) where he also chaired their federal political action committee and helped lead corporate social responsibility; Chief of Staff to U.S. Congressman Martin Sabo (1993-2006); Member of the Bi-Partisan Policy Center's National Transportation Project (2008-2011); State Chair of Minnesota's Democratic Party (1999-2005). Mike ran for Congress (2006) finishing second in a multi-candidate primary and was elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in Washington, D.C. (1991-94).  He has appeared on national television and radio shows including: NBC's Today Show, Hardball, ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, CNN, C-SPAN, and NPR. He graduated from St. John's University and Harvard's Kennedy School's Program for Senior Managers in Government.


Christian Franzen

Government Relations Specialist, Franzen Moore

Prior to joining Franzen Moore Government Relations, Mr. Franzen served as a Research Consultant for the Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office in Edinburgh, Scotland. In that position, Christian was responsible for monitoring Parliamentary Committee meetings, reporting to members and preparing briefing papers on issues including race equality, bankruptcy reform and correctional facility populations.

Mr. Franzen served his internship with former Minnesota Speaker of the House, Steve Sviggum, and now focuses his legislative energies on Health Care Policy, Finance and Reform.


Colin Frederick

Consultant, World Bank

Colin Frederick works as a consultant at the World Bank, which finances development projects and technical strategies to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity.

Prior to joining the World Bank, Colin was a senior consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where he oversaw the project management and performance analysis of a digital transformation program geared to improve efficiencies, facilitate innovation, foster collaboration and share knowledge throughout the IDB’s operational initiatives.

During his time at St. John's, Colin was a Washington, DC Summer Study participant, a Marie and Robert Jackson Fellow and he also represented the school at the Harvard National Model United Nations and the 62nd Student Conference on US Affairs held at the US Military Academy in West Point.

Additionally, Colin was a member of the St. John's Senate, played varsity soccer and served as a resident assistant. To gain international exposure, Colin spent a semester abroad at Universidad Rafael Landivar in Guatemala, where he fostered a greater understanding of Latin American anthropology, cultural norms, environmental practices, and volunteered for community-based organization.


Tom Freeman

Government Relations Advisor, Faegre Baker Daniels

Tom Freeman is a government relations advisor, representing the firm's clients before the Minnesota Legislature, state government agencies and local units of government. He has represented businesses, nonprofit organizations, and trade and professional associations before the Minnesota Legislature, state agencies and local units of government. Tom graduated from Saint John's University in 2008.


Sarah Haas

Office and Development Associate, OneVillage Partners

I am a recent graduate living and working in Minneapolis for a non-profit that provides community-led development in Sierra Leone, called OneVillage Partners. Throughout my time at CSB/SJU, I appreciated the support from alumni, professors, and students and I want to continue to provide that support for others.


Amy Halloran

Author and Activist, Unity House of Troy, NY

Amy Halloran is the author of The New Bread Basket: How the New Crop of Grain Growers, Plant Breeders, Millers, Maltsters, Bakers, Brewers, and Local Food Activists Are Redefining Our Daily Loaf. She ran the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market in its infancy, and now runs a soup kitchen and food pantry at Unity House. Through writing and teaching, she works to support farmers, eaters, and change in food and agriculture.


Nick Hansen

Communications Specialist, Hennepin County Bar Association

Nick is a 2010 grad who has worked in the fields of environmental recreation, journalism, and now in nonprofit communications. He is passionate about civic engagement, journalism, sustainability, and justice. More often than not, Nick probably has a newspaper tucked under his arm.


Ben Hutterer

Legislative Correspondant, US Senate

Ben works as a Legislative Correspondent for a Midwest Democratic Senator. While at CSB/SJU, he participated in the D.C. Summer Study Program, student senate, and debate. Ben also worked in the Political Science Department and volunteered in the McCarthy Center. Ben moved to D.C. immediately after graduation and was an intern in the House of Representatives before finding a Staff Assistant job in the Senate. Ben now handles correspondence for the Senator in veterans' affairs, foreign affairs, homeland security, and defense.


Mark Irion

Former Senate staff for energy and environmental. Former CEO of public policy management consultancy, Dutko Worldwide. Former President of integrated public affairs and marketing communications agency, Levick. Currently the Head of Strategic Communications at Hogan Lovells US LLP.


Emily Johnson

Assistant Account Executive, The Harrington Company

I was a Jackson Fellow at CSB/SJU from 2013-2014. I did my internship at a residential mental health clinic and youth day program in Duluth. I did AmeriCorps for two years after college with College Possible working with high schoolers on college access. I'm one year into my current position, managing non-profit professional associations


Ryan Kelley

Senior Planner, Metropolitan Council

Ryan Kelley believes that development with thoughtful design creates places people love. He encourages innovation and expanding possibilities. Ryan is currently a senior planner at the Metropolitan Council where he oversees the Livable Communities Transit-Oriented Development, Demonstration, and affordable housing grant programs. He was previously a planner for the City of St. Louis Park where he worked on development review, bike and pedestrian planning, Southwest LRT station area planning and managed the development of a form-based code for these station areas. Ryan was also a land use planner for the Active Living Hennepin County program. Ryan studied Landscape Architecture and received his Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs with concentrations in Environmental Planning and Urban Design in 2012. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from St. John’s University in 2001.


Nicole Kelly

Behavior Therapist, The Lovaas Institute Midwest

Nicole Kelly graduated from CSB/SJU in 2017 with a degree in Sociology. During her time on campus, Nicole worked for the Music Department, was involved in the CSB Women's Choir and the Choral Arts Ensemble, had an internship at the McCarthy Center, served as a Student Ambassador, and volunteered at All Saints Academy as an academic tutor. Nicole currently works at The Lovaas Institute Midwest based out of Minneapolis as a Behavior Therapist. As a Behavior Therapist, Nicole provides ABA therapy to young children with Autism. 


Sean Kershaw

Executive Director, Citizens' League

In 2003 Sean Kershaw became just the sixth Citizens League Executive Director in its 60 year history. Sean has been a member of the Citizens League's 50th Anniversary report on Doing the Common Good Better prior to becoming the executive Director. During his tenure, membership in the Citizens League has more than doubled; revenue has tripled, and the organization has helped to initiate new ways of addressing public policy issues. Kershaw left his position as a Deputy Director for the City of Saint Paul's Department of Planning and Economic Development (PED), where he had worked for 11 years. Prior to that, he was planning coordinator for the Public Housing Authority in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. Kershaw is passionate about active citizenship, civic organizing, and good public policy. He is a founding member of the Active Citizens School, a young adult civic leadership program, and is currently part of the Minnesota Active Citizenship Initiative. Kershaw is on the Board for the Twin Cities United Way.


Kylie Kiesner

Global Marketing Advisor, Sanford Health

Lindsey Krause

Associate Attorney, Nichols Kaster, PLLP

Lindsey Krause earned her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in May 2016. She is currently an Associate at Nichols Kaster, PLLP where she primarily represents employees in discrimination and whistleblower cases. Prior to joining Nichols Kaster, Krause was a law clerk for the Honorable Judge Frank J. Kundrat in Stearns County. While a law student she served as the President of the Women's Law Student Association and as the Lead Student Articles Editor on the Journal of Law and Inequality. Krause's article on juvenile criminal sentencing reform was published in Volume 33 of the journal. During her time at CSB/SJU, Krause was heavily involved in political campaigns and served as an intern in Amy Klobuchar's Washington D.C. office though the school's DC Program. Her interests include craft beer, weightlifting, traveling, and collecting political campaign buttons.


Chase Kroll

Founder and CEO, Kroll Global, LLC

Chase Kroll brings years of relevant and diversified experience, having run major political campaigns, legislative operations, and high-impact advocacy efforts in Washington, DC, for U.S. and international clients.

Mr. Kroll has conducted numerous interviews, including print, radio, and television, and spoken at conferences related to politics and advocacy.

Before founding Kroll Global, he was Vice President at Go BIG Media, an award-winning full-service media and consulting firm. In this role, Mr. Kroll ran successful advocacy and PR campaigns for a wide variety of clients, including top tier defense contractors, national trade associations, and non-profits. He was also head of media relations, regularly booking and training clients for national media interviews.

Before joining Go BIG, he was a senior associate and lobbyist at David Turch & Associates, where he oversaw an assorted portfolio of domestic and global entities. His background includes time on Capitol Hill as a legislative advisor for a high-profile Member of Congress, and leadership positions on several federal campaigns, including Campaign Manager of the most expensive winning House race in history.

Mr. Kroll earned a Bachelor's degree from St. John's University and a Master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. He is also a graduate of the Air Force Air Command and Staff College.


Brenda Kyle

President and CEO, Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce

As President and CEO of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, B represents over 1200 Twin Cities companies of all sizes and industries, as well as not-for-profit and government organizations. The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic network of businesses and individuals, and is known for its strong advocacy both at a regional and state level on behalf of the business community.

Within the community, B is a Midway Chamber of Commerce board member. She also is the 2015-17 president of the Minnesota Precision Manufacturing Association (MPMA), and is editor-in-chief of its bi-monthly trade journal, Precision Manufacturing.

B graduated from the College of Saint Benedict and is a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to her work at the Chamber, she spent 11 years at the Saint Paul Port Authority, ultimately co-leading its development work on projects such as the Treasure Island Center, and Major League Soccer.


Kathy Larrea

Assistant Program Manager, Life Time Fitness

Kathy graduated in 2014 from CSB/SJU with a degree in Psychology and Anthropology. While at CSB/SJU, Kathy spent a semester studying abroad in South Africa and volunteering weekly in a food shelter in one of South Africa’s most impoverished communities. This first-hand experience with food injustice first spiked Kathy’s interest in the issues surrounding nutrition and access to food, which was then furthered when she participated in the 2013 cohort of the Marie and Robert Jackson Fellows Program. The cohort focused on food justice in Minnesota, and produced a publication featuring poetry, narratives and artwork from individuals all around the state highlighting their personal experience with food injustice. Kathy currently works at Life Time Fitness as an Assistant Program Manager within the Personal Training and Nutrition department at their headquarters in Chanhassen, MN. In this role, Kathy helps coordinate and produce content for Life Time’s member base to help make healthy habits easy, and sustainable.


John Lindstrom

Retired Judge and Mediator

Judge Lindstrom was most recently a Minnesota District Court Judge for the Eighth Judicial District from July 1976 to August 2005. From January 1973 to June 1976 he was a Minnesota State Representative and prior to that, engaged in private practice of law for over nine years. He was the President of the Minnesota District Court Judges Association as well as a member of the Board of Directors for the organization. He is also a member of both the Minnesota and American Bar Associations and the National State Trial Judges Association. He has received numerous honors throughout his career, Lindstrom was a Fellow of the American Bar Association and received a Saint John's University Presidential Citation. Lindstrom currently serves as a mediator and arbitrator with the Gilbert Mediation Center. John is a 1963 graduate of Saint John's University.


Sean Lynch

Account Executive, Olson Engage

Sean is an Account Executive supporting Olson's public relations programs in the Corporate Affairs division. He supports Olson's clients both nationally and in Minnesota in developing and promoting a positive public image through proactive media relations and outreach efforts. Sean joined Olson Engage after serving as the public affairs lead with the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), an education nonprofit based in Alexandria, VA. Sean served as ACTE's primary spokesman and lobbyist, provided media and advocacy training , and built the organization's national media presence. Previously, Sean worked with the Air-conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute, where he managed day-to-day communications with executive leadership for nationally recognized manufacturing brands. Sean graduated from Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. with bachelor's degrees in Political Science and German Studies.


Joe Mahowald

Program Associate, Minnesota Brownfields

Joe is a recent CSBSJU graduate who graduated with a degree in Political Science. He currently works as for an environmental redevelopment nonprofit. His areas of focus are environmental and energy policy and communications. As a student, Joe received a great deal of advice and insight from alums and others in the McCarthy Center Mentor Program and he aims to help the next group of future leaders.


Lindsey Minto

Sr. Associate Product Manager, Nuasive

I am a 2013 graduate of CSB/SJU. After graduation, I worked for approximately 1 year in Minneapolis at Medtronic in Clinical Affairs. I now work at a medical device company called Nuvasive- spinal technology company. I am a product/marketing manager for a computer based neurophysiology system, working with our international markets- APAC, LATAM, EMEA. I ran cross country and track at CSB/SJU. I also participated in ETL. I am interested in non profit work, social justice and healthcare. 


Vic Moore

Co-Owner, Franzen and Moore

Vic Moore is the co-owner of a legislative consulting company called Franzen and Moore. Prior to that, he worked in the Minnesota State Senate for 22 years, and the last 13 years as a DFL Chief of staff. Before that he was a planner and director at the Minnesota State Planning Agency for 10 years. He graduated with a Government major from SJU in 1972. He has sat on the Board of Directors of the St. John's National Alumni Association, and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the CSB/SJU Politics and Public Policy Alum Chapter. In college he played football, basketball and baseball and he is currently on the Board of Directors of the J Club.


Madison Morris

Executive Assistant to the CEO, Office Manager, IMGE

Madison is a 2017 graduate of St. Ben’s with a degree in political science and Hispanic studies. She currently serves the executive staff of IMGE, a leading digital agency in Washington, DC. This full-service firm works for Fortune 500 corporate clients, Republican candidates (House, Senate, and Gubernatorial races), and political organizations. Some of the services IMGE offers to clients include: digital advocacy, advertising, branding, website design and development, video and graphic design, email marketing and fundraising, and social media strategy. In her role, Madison coordinates projects with our teams and executive staff, handles client meeting requests and scheduling, and manages the office’s day-to-day operations.

During her time at CSB/SJU, Madison was involved with College Republicans, AKS Service Sorority, Model United Nations, Campus Ministry, study abroad, and the McCarthy Center. Madison completed internships with Congressman Tom Emmer in his district office during her senior year, and the U.S. Department of State while she was on the Summer Study DC Program in 2016.


Jim Mulrooney

Relationship Team Lead, Vice-President, Wells Fargo

Jim Mulrooney is vice president and team lead of the Midwest Local Government Banking team. Covering nine states in the Central Region, the Midwest Local Government Banking team works with local governments to help them meet the financial needs of their communities.

Before leading the Midwest team, Jim served clients across the state of Minnesota for four years as a Relationship Manager on the Regional Government Banking team. From 2010-2012 he was a Relationship Manager with the Business Banking Group in Saint Paul, Minn. Prior to his tenure as a banker, Jim spent seven years as part of Wells Fargo’s Corporate Government Relations team in Washington, D.C. advocating for Wells Fargo’s clients, team members, and stakeholders. A strong proponent of internship experiences, Jim regularly highlights that his entry point to Wells Fargo came by way of an internship with the Government Relations team in June 2003.

Jim received his B.A. in Political Science from Saint John’s University (Collegeville, Minn.), and his M.A. in Political Management from The George Washington University.

Jim is a Certified Treasury Professional and a member of the Diversity and Inclusion for the Government and Institutional Banking team.

A true passion for Jim has been his commitment to community service and diversity. Jim serves on numerous boards including the Minnesota Children’s Museum and as current chair of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation. He remains an active volunteer with the Minnesota Boychoir following his 8 years of service on their Board of Directors.


Nikolas Nadeau

Senior Associate, Speechwriting & Internal Communications, Target Corporation

I grew up in White Bear Lake, MN and have spent significant time living/working in both Boston and South Korea. I currently work on the Communications team at Target, which encompasses executive speechwriting, internal communications and public affairs. My past experience has spanned the fields of journalism, publishing, international education, and politics/government. I am a big advocate of strategic risk-taking, networking, and building a career in the context of one's holistic needs, goals and personal identity. I am also an adopted Korean American who is passionate about Asian American professional development, cultural identity, representation in literature/pop culture, and general issues faced by people of color in the United States. Lastly, as a former academic editor I frequently give consultation on cover letters, personal statements, mock interviews, etc. and would gladly offer any help you may wish to receive with yours. Jessey Niyongabo

Environmental Specialist, Tge World Bank Group

Jessey Niyongabo is an Environmental Specialist working with the World Bank Group Environment and Natural Resources Global Practice and the Climate Change Cross-Cutting Solutions Areas. He specializes in environmental assessment, natural resources management and climate change. Jessey is a Senior Environmental Assessment and Policy International Expert at the Global Environmental and Energy Consulting Services (GEECS), an environmental and energy consulting firm based in Ottawa. He has held various research and analytical positions at the African Climate Policy Centre (housed at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), a centre par-excellence for climate policy in Africa and the Secretariat of the Climate for Development in Africa Initiative (African Union-African Development Bank-United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) and at the United Nations Environment Programme.

Jessey holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada and a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Studies and Political Science from Saint John’s University, Minnesota, USA. He is fluent in English, French, Spanish, Kirundi and speaks basic Kiswahili and Amharic.


Cap O'Rourke

Principal, O'Rourke Strategic Consulting

Cap O'Rourke has spent his entire career working as a legislative strategist, policy advocate and grassroots campaigner. With every experience he has gained a greater understanding of the complex political, financial and human pressures that affect how public policy decisions are generally made. Using that experience Cap founded O'Rourke Strategic Consulting (OSC), which assists organizations strengthen their position and have a greater impact on policies in which they are invested.  His client base affords him the opportunity to work inside a broad range of issues.  His career started while working on a number of political campaigns across the state of Minnesota, which helped him transition to a staff position in the Minnesota Legislature. Being on the front lines of both state-wide and smaller municipal campaigns was a great experience and allowed him to understand what factors elected officials consider when making decisions. With over a decade of legislative experience he has had the privilege of working first hand on a number of major legislative proposals including tax reform, stadiums, education reform and small business development projects.


Joyce Overman Dube

Senior Principal Health Systems Engineer, Mayo Clinic

Joyce currently leads the Commitment to Safety Program at Mayo Clinic across all campuses (Rochester, MN, Jacksonville, FL, Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ, Mayo Clinic Health System in MN, IA, Wi). She brings extensive experience leading a large surgical/procedural nursing division with multiple projects and priorities; an ability to work with diverse multidisciplinary teams and individuals to bring complex problems to resolution; experience as the leader of projects for noise control in the hospital, service excellence and RN bedside handoff across Mayo Clinic campuses; and leadership for the promotion of scholarly activities and health promotion. Joyce has presented and published on a variety of topics locally, nationally and internationally.
Prior to her current role, she served as a staff nurse, nurse manager and nurse administrator. Joyce is a Mayo Clinic Silver Quality Fellow and an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.


Stephanie Pinkalla

Government Relations Associate, The Nature Conservancy

Stephanie is a 2014 graduate of CSB/SJU who does policy work and lobbying for The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota at the state and federal level. Her patchwork of jobs leading up to being a conservation advocate included organizing for the DFL in the 2014 election cycle, working two sessions at the MN legislature for a government relations firm, a stint in urban agriculture, and in waste & sustainability management. As a student at CSB/SJU she was involved in the Full Circle Greenhouse, Sustainability Alliance, Peer Resource Program, Senate, College Democrats, and in the DC Summer Study Program. Her academic focus as a student included climate policy research, climate science perceptions, and wilderness policy.


Patrick Plonski

Executive Director, Books For Africa

Dr. Patrick Plonski currently serves as Director of Books for Africa, the world's largest shipper of donated text and library books to the African continent. Since 1988, the organization has distributed over 29 million books to African children in 49 African countries. Dr. Plonski has 23 years of experience in university administration, and international non-profit management and literacy advancement, and holds a PhD in international education. Plonski currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Minnesota teaching World Development Problems coursework with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In addition, Plonski previously served as Executive Director of Minnesota Agricultural Education Council (MAELC) at the University of Minnesota.


Richie Podvin

Juris Doctorate Candidate, Mitchell Hamline School of Law

Richie is a 2L (second-year law student)at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, MN. A proud 2016 CSBSJU grad, Richie worked as a Student Coordinator at the McCarthy Center.

Outside his school work, Richie currently is employed by the Washington County Attorney's Office as a law clerk in the adult criminal division. Richie is also an associate editor for Mitchell Hamline's yearly Law Review publication. Richie's current interests include criminal law, anything public-policy related, and Twins baseball.


Gary Prevost

Professor Emeritus, Political Science, CSB/SJU, Retired

Professor Emeritus of Political Science at CSB/SJU retiring after forty years of service in 2017. Also, currently Research Associate in Political and Conflict Studies at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Author or editor of fifteen books primarily on Latin American politics. Author of more than fifty journal articles with a focus on social and political movements in Latin America, Spain, and South Africa. A CSB/SJU mentor to hundreds of students who have pursued careers in academia, law, non-profit organizations and journalism.


Eric Reeve

Operations Administrator, Mayo Clinic

Eric is an accomplished healthcare manager with over 13 years of experience at Mayo Clinic. He has performed in a variety of roles in clinical and non clinical assignments including Operations Administrator, Operations Manager, Health System Engineering Analyst, and Finance Supervisor. Eric's education includes MBA from the CAHME accredited University of Saint Thomas Health Care MBA program and a BA from Saint John's University. Eric has demonstrated leadership in patient care administration, process improvement, finance, change management, and personnel development.


Alex Ricci

Professional Staff Member, U.S. House of Representatives

Alex Ricci is a 2013 graduate from Saint John's University, and is currently working as a Professional Staff Member in the U.S. House of Representatives. In Congress, he works on student loan and campus-based aid policy solutions. Prior to moving to D.C., Alex worked on multiple congressional campaigns in MN. He sees his post-graduate life as a testament to the strength of the Mentor Program - the alumni connections he made as a student referred him to his first jobs after graduation. Alex's experiences as a Saint John's student and graduate have inspired him to seek a career helping people solve problems.


John Schaus

Fellow, CSIS

John Schaus is a fellow in the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he focuses on security challenges in Asia. In addition, he presents CSIS’s flagship presentation on future trends, “Seven Revolutions: Scanning the Horizon Out to the Year 2035 and Beyond.” Prior to rejoining CSIS in July 2014, he worked on Asia issues within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. His roles there included serving on the China desk and as regional policy adviser to the assistant secretary for APSA, in particular regarding the rebalance to the Asia Pacific. Prior to working in the Pentagon, Mr. Schaus served as executive officer to the president and CEO of CSIS for five years. He received a B.A. from St. John’s University in Minnesota, and an M.P.P. from the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs.


Gabriel Schlabach

Associate, Boies Schiller Flexner LLP

Gabe graduated from CSB/SJU in 2007. He majored in political science and earned departmental distinction for his honors thesis evaluating the relationship between the Christian Right and the Republican Party. He spent two years after graduation working on Capitol Hill for Mennonite Central Committee, a non-profit relief and development organization. There he advocated to congressional offices regarding a host of issues, including criminal justice reform, civil rights, and immigration. After spending a year living in Southeast Asia, Gabe attended Stanford Law School and graduated in 2014. He clerked for Justice Joel Bolger of the Alaska Supreme Court and is now an Associate at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP in California.


Jessica Slattery

Foreign Service Officer, United States Department of State

Jessica Slattery is a Foreign Service Officer stationed at the U.S. Embassy, Port au Prince, Haiti through March, 2019. Previously, Ms. Slattery was a foreign affairs officer at the State Department in Washington, D.C. in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Office of International Labor Affairs, which covers global child labor, the International Labor Organization, supply chains, the informal economy, and labor conditions in the countries of South and Central Asia. Ms. Slattery previously served as political officer responsible for the human rights and labor portfolio at U.S. Embassy Dhaka, Bangladesh. In the Spring of 2014, Ms. Slattery covered the International Labor Organization multilateral diplomacy portfolio in the Department's Bureau of International Organization Affairs, Office of Human Security. In 2013, Ms. Slattery also served as a political officer at the U.S. Mission to the European Union covering human rights and European enlargement as well as the EU's relationship with the countries in Africa. Prior to joining the State Department, Ms. Slattery worked as an attorney practicing business and commercial litigation in Minnesota and served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Justice Wilhelmina M. Wright. Ms. Slattery holds dual M.A.s in International Relations and European History as part of the Atlantis Program through Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland, and the University of Tartu in Tartu, Estonia, and West Virginia University, a J.D. from the University of St. Thomas, School of Law, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a B.A. in Management and Communications from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. She is the recipient of two of the State Department's Meritorious Honor Awards for her work on Bangladesh and two Franklin Honor Awards. Ms. Slattery has language skills in Spanish, Russian, Polish, Estonian, French, and Haitian Creole.


Katie Spoden

Applied Community and Economic Development Fellow, Illinois State University

Katie is a CSBSJU alumna, graduating in May of 2014. She dedicated two years post-undergrad to serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member and increasing healthy food access to low-income communities in central MN. Katie served as a Board Member for the St. Joseph Farmers Market and for the Central Chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association. As a student, Katie majored in Political Science and Environmental Studies. She participated in the Washington, D.C. Summer Study Program, was involved with McCarthy Center programs, and was a student employee in the Political Science Department. Katie is currently in graduate school at Illinois State University earning her MS in Applied Community and Economic Development. 


Ann Steingraeber

Attorney, Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A.

Ann Steingraeber practices in Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A.’s real estate group, where she focuses on land use law, the purchase and sale of real property, title and survey review, and leasing matters. Ann has experience representing both for-profit and non-profit clients in a variety of real estate transactions, including compliance with federal tax credit programs. Ann also practices in affordable housing development law, and prior to joining the firm, she was an attorney at the Housing Justice Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and expanding the supply of affordable housing in Minnesota.

Ann graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. She was a student attorney in the Land Use Legal Clinic, a volunteer law clerk with the Minnesota Justice Foundation and President of the Environmental Law Society. Before attending law school, Ann served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Panama for three years.

Ann received her undergraduate degree from the College of Saint Benedict where she was a member of the women’s cross country team and a naturalist at the Saint John’s Arboretum.


Amanda Stephenson

Associate, David Turch and Associate 

Amanda Stephenson joined David Turch and Associates in 2016 from the School of Policy and Government at George Mason University where she earned her degree in political science. Ms. Stephenson was a member of the Division I Women’s Soccer Team and a recipient of a prestigious athletic scholarship.  She also earned a coveted nomination as a Women in Government Relations fellow since graduation, two times over.  As a Southern California native, Ms. Stephenson has cultivated a deep understanding of the California region where her policy ingenuity proves to be advantageous to David Turch and Associates.   


Patrick Stewart-Hester

Senior Legislative Assistant, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Patrick Stewart-Hester is a 2013 graduate of Saint John's University. During his time at SJU he studied history and served as the president of the Saint John's Senate. After graduating he moved to Washington, D.C. where he began interning and later working for a member of the Minnesota Congressional delegation. Patrick now works as a Senior Legislative Assistant for a Republican Congresswoman where he is responsible for advising the member on a legislative portfolio containing agriculture, education, energy, environment, labor, and financial services policy. 


Drew Stommes

Doctoral Student, Yale University

Drew is a doctoral student in political science at Yale University, specializing in comparative politics in general and the intersection of elections and violence in particular. His research agenda leverages data and cases drawn from the entire South Asia region. Prior to Yale, Drew received his master’s degree in international relations from the University of Chicago and worked briefly in the private sector as a market research analyst. Additionally, he provided research support at two Washington, D.C.-based think tanks, studied abroad in India as a CSB/SJU student, and worked as a student coordinator at the McCarthy Center.


Zach Thelen-Liebl

Executive Director, The Barn Theater

Zack was born and raised in the Willmar Community.  He obtained his two-year degree from Ridgewater College before transferring to St John’s.  Zack enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard at age 17, and then received his commission as an Army Officer after graduating in 2010. Zack has an interest in local and state politics, having ran for office twice. His work background is mainly focused in nonprofits.  He is currently the Executive Director of The Barn Theatre, the largest arts center in the 18 county region.  He is still serving in the National Guard as a Company Commander of a Combat Engineer unit. Zack is married and resides in Hutchinson.  


Tyler Thompson

Recreation Area Supervisor, Three Rivers Park District

Tyler works for Three Rivers Park District helping manage more than 25,000 acres of park reserves and regional parks and more than 100 miles of regional trails in suburban Hennepin County. Tyler supervises more than 30 seasonal and part-time staff performing a variety of visitor services jobs in developed recreation areas. Tyler collaborates with natural resource managers, park planners, law enforcement, accountants, and human resource personnel on a weekly basis. Previously Tyler worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Denver, Colorado conducting socioeconomic research and analysis. Tyler's interests include recreation economics, government administration, public land management, and land use planning.


Jona Van Deun

Vice President of Small Business Engagement, US Chamber of Commerce (effective October 4th)

Jona Van Deun interned at the White House while a student at CSB. After graduation in 1992, she returned to the White House as a member of the scheduling staff for President George H.W. Bush. In 2000-02, she served as director of scheduling and advance for Second Lady of the U.S. Lynne Cheney. Since 2012, Van Deun has been director of coalitions at Koch Companies Public Sector in Washington, D.C. She will serve as the Vice President of Small Business Engagement for the US Chamber of Commerce starting in early October.
